One of the most useful ways to learn is to gain hands on experience by shadowing
experienced veterinarians. Students have found the following two shadow programs to be
extremely valuable:
-
KSU ICU Shadow Program - Veterinary students sign up to
spend time in the ICU at the teaching hospital. They gain hands-on experience by helping
the senior student with hourly rounds and being involved In all work-ups of incoming
emergency cases. During the diagnosis and treatment, students may observe radiology,
ultrasonography, endoscopy, and surgery on the patient.
-
Kansas City Emergency Clinic Shadow Program (Mission
MedVet) - Veterinary students can spend weekends at a busy Kansas City
Emergency Clinic. Students can follow the emergency clinician from the exam room to the
work-up and treatment of the patient. This is a very busy emergency clinic which is
connected to a referral practice with Internists, Surgeons, Oncologists, Dermatologists
and more specialists. The emergency clinic has a great case load and excellent doctors who
are great to work with.
Service - Veterinary students
collect recyclable materials in bins through out the veterinary school
with bi-monthly collections.
