FAQ - Sophomores

Junior Electives

  • As you sign up for your junior year classes, you will be offered one or more electives. While these electives are completely optional, they are highly beneficial, especially if you are interested in the specific area that they are offered in. Other than Practice Management (aka Junior Pathways), the junior electives may vary from year to year, but overall, Practice Management is offered both semesters, and any other electives are only offered spring semester. So, if you are interested in taking any of these electives, it may be in your best interest to take Practice Management in the fall, so that you have more time to take the other electives in the spring.

    • Practice Management: This is a credit/no credit class offered in a lecture format covering the business aspects of being a veterinarian. In this class you will learn how to market yourself in job applications and interviews. You will learn basic marketing to improve your clinic’s income and clientele. You will learn how to manage people, and how to best organize your staff to get the best out of everyone. You will learn how to negotiate your salary, and what to look for in a clinic/employer when looking for a job. There is no final test for this class, but you must attend all sessions for credit. This one credit elective is offered both fall and spring semesters each year.

    • Small Animal Emergency Medicine: This class if offered either as a standard graded class, or you also have the opportunity to audit it. This class is an introduction to the fundamentals of small animal emergency medicine via a systems approach, including triage, transfusion medicine, and CPR. This one credit elective is only offered in the spring at the discretion of the instructor.
