For the eighth consecutive year, the Veterinary Medical Library at
K-State has received a grant from the Kansas Library Network Board. The $6,950 grant will
enable the library to enhance and expand materials for the Animals in Society collection
of books, videos and journals. This unique compilation of materials covers a wide range of
topics that deal with all aspects of human-animal relationships including cultural and
religious attitudes, animals in the arts, sports, and history, pet loss and bereavement,
farm animal welfare, animal law, and the human/companion animal bond.
"I am extremely proud to say that the Veterinary Medical Library at K-State has one
of the best Animals in Society collections in the nation. We have something for everyone,
from children's picture books to sophisticated research material. It is our hope that the
general public will take advantage of having such an extraordinary collection in our
community," said Gayle Willard, Director of the K-State Veterinary Medical Library.
Having these materials available locally will save time for the library's users and it
will also enhance the library's contribution to the statewide interlibrary loan network.
Interlibrary loan is a statewide cooperative service that permits people to borrow
materials from libraries across the state. To qualify for Interlibrary Loan Development
Grants, applicants agree to make materials in their collections available through
interlibrary loan. Proposals are funded on the basis of their potential to improve the
statewide interlibrary loan network.
This grant program is funded by the State of Kansas, and is administered by the Kansas
Library Network Board, a division of the State Library in Topeka. Forty-one libraries from
across the state submitted a total of 55 ILDP grant proposals. The Network Board approved
the funding for 24 of the applications at its spring meeting in May.
