Veterinary Medicine Students Honored at White Coat Ceremony and Honors Banquet

By Brennan Engle

The Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine honored 107 students entering their last year of veterinary school April 29 at the annual White Coat ceremony. During the ceremony, students of the class of 2006 were cloaked with a white lab coat to symbolize the transition into their final year of study. During their fourth year, students are promoted from the classroom to working in the veterinary medical teaching hospital and assisting in actual cases.

The ceremony was punctuated by remarks given by Dr. Lester Crawford, acting commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration and highest ranking veterinarian in the country. "The year you're about to embark on was the most important in my life," Crawford told the students gathered in the K-State Student Union Ballroom. "Everyday I hark back to something I learned in that fourth year." Crawford also urged the class to be caring members of the veterinary profession. "Keep your heart in the profession; also take care of yourself."

Wearing their white coats, the class then turned toward the crowd of peers, family members and friends, taking an oath of professionalism.

That evening, an honors banquet was held where $72,000 in scholarships and awards were presented to the 2005 graduating class. Those recipients and their awards are listed below.
