External Scholarship Sources
The following awards have an
individual application process. Many of these awards are funded by
special interest groups from outside of the College of Veterinary
Medicine. Decisions regarding distribution of these awards are primarily
determined by the funding agency, although a few are determined by the
Awards and Scholarship Committee. Completion of the on-line scholarship
form is not sufficient to be eligible for these scholarships. Please
watch for e-mail announcements over the course of the fall semester for
instructions to apply for these specific scholarships, or apply
according to the instructions listed below.
AABP Bovine Veterinary Student
Recognition Award
Five awards of $1,500 each plus reimbursement for award winners for all
travel and lodging expenses to the AABP annual conference. Award winners
also receive plaque. Recipients shall be 2nd or 3rd year students. They
need to write a letter which outlines their background, work and
academic experience, primary interests in veterinary medicine, career
goals and provide the name of a faculty sponsor. The faculty sponsor
electronically submits student's letter and a supporting letter of
sponsorship regarding the applicant's qualifications to the vet school's
AABP faculty representative (Dr. Dan Thomson) by March 10th, AABP rep
electronically submits everything to AABP office by March 15th.
American Holistic Veterinary
Medical Association Scholarship
Students are required to write an essay of no more than 3 typed pages.
Deadline is August 15th. Look for e-mail announcement.
American Kennel Club
Veterinary Student Scholarships
Recipient shall be an accepted or current full-time student at an
accredited college of veterinary medicine. Must complete application
(includes essay and transcripts). Criteria for awarding: academic
achievement and potential, activities in purebred dogs and/or relevant
research, and financial need.
American Quarter Horse
Foundation Telephony Scholarship
Award is $10,000 given to a third year student who demonstrates academic
merit in the field of equine medicine and a love for helping horses.
Assistance will be awarded to an AQHA member in an equine veterinary
medicine program who wishes to pursue an equine focused veterinary
practice. Applicants must be enrolled as a third year student when
applying and provide evidence of a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point
average. Funding will be applied to student’s last year of the
veterinary program. Current or previous recipients are not eligible to
reapply for this scholarship.
American Quarter Horse Racing
Scholarship
Funding will be awarded to members of AQHA/AQHYA who have experience
within the racing industry or are seeking a career in the industry.
Applicants seeking a career in the racing industry may specialize in
veterinary medicine, racetrack management or other related fields.
Members may apply during their senior year of high school or while
enrolled at an accredited college, university or vocational school.
Applicants must provide evidence of a minimum cumulative 2.5 grade point
average. Current or previous recipients are not eligible to reapply for
this scholarship. Students apply directly through AQHA.
American Veterinary Medical
Foundation
The recipient shall be a student showing financial need with interest in
companion animal nutrition or medicine.
Association for Women
Veterinarians Scholarships
Recipients are 2nd and 3rd year female students. Check website for

Bil-Jac Student of Veterinary
Medicine Scholarship
Student must be a second or third year student in the CVM, student
should be enrolled in small animal studies, student exhibits scholastic
achievement in the upper 1/3 of his/her class, and should exhibit a
desire to promote greater awareness of small animal nutrition.
Hansen, Dane G. Scholarship
Student should be enrolled as a 3rd year student, top 10% of their
class, graduate of a Kansas High school, applicants who have a northwest
Kansas background and whose career plans include the probability of
practice in the state of Kansas are given preference. Students must
prepare a curriculum vitae and write a letter stating plans and
aspirations for pursuit of a career in veterinary medicine. Three
letters of recommendation should accompany application with a cover
letter. Include permission for the Dean's office to forward academic
information to the Review Committee. Application materials due October
21st.
Imperial Valley Kennel Club
Scholarship
Award for legal residents of Imperial County, California. Must be
presently enrolled in a recognized four year DVM program. Must submit
completed application (in folder) by April 1 and include a copy of
college acceptance letter, two letters of recommendation from teachers,
two letters of recommendation from non-school associated adults, and two
personal essays.
International Kiko Goat
Association Scholarship
Awarded to a student who is specializing in small ruminants (especially
goats). To apply, send letter of intent, letters of recommendation, and
official transcripts to IKGA Office, 4453 Hwy 11E, Bluff City, TN 37618.
Kenneth Eskelund Preceptorship
Award (offered by American Association of Avian Pathologists)
Students apply directly to AAAP, applications available in 212 Trotter
Hall. This scholarship provides vet students with up to $1,200 to $1,500
to defray living and travel expenses while attending a 2 to 4 week
poultry medicine preceptorship training program.
KVMA Mentor of the Year
Students nominate a practitioner who is a member of KVMA and who has
provided them with a great experience as a mentor. Practitioner must
also participate in the KVMA Student/Practitioner Mentoring Program.
Nominations consist of a one page essay describing their experiences
with their favorite KVMA practitioner and describing qualities that make
them a great mentor. The student who submits the successful nomination
will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the KVMA. Essays due December
2nd.
L. Dwight Schwartz Travel
Scholarship (offered by American Association of Avian Pathologists)
Students apply directly to AAAP, applications available in 212 Trotter
Hall. This scholarship is in the amount of up to $1,500 to help defray
travel expenses to the American Veterinary Medical Association's
meeting.
Lewis, Tim Memorial
Scholarship
Students apply directly to donor, applications due April 15th and are
available in 212 Trotter Hall. Any student in CVM is eligible.
Application consists of 1. Copy of veterinary curriculum transcripts, 2.
Statements of area of veterinary interest, 3. Future plans; Students
mail application to: Rebecca A. Lewis 1818 Hunters Court, Steamboat, CO
80487; Students also need to include their address in the header of
their essay!
Michael Allen Veterinary
Student Scholarship (American Spaniel Club Foundation)
Recipient shall be a current full-time student at an accredited US
College of Veterinary Medicine. Award criteria consists of academic
achievement, activities in purebred dogs and/or relevant research, and
financial need. This is a one time $2,500 scholarship to be awarded to
one individual in 2007 and 2009. Students complete application packet
and return to 212 Trotter Hall, ASCF will only accept four applications
directly from the school. Applications must be received by May 1st.
Recipient is announced in July at the American Spaniel Club Cocker
Spaniel National Specialty. Application packet consists of application
form, two page essay describing background and interest, undergraduate
and graduate transcripts, and two letters of reference from professors
or academic advisors.
Mildred C. Sylvester
Scholarship (American Veterinary Medical Foundation)
The AVMF, through its Mildred C. Sylvester Scholarship Fund, will award
thirteen $2,000 scholarships to 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year students who are
attending an accredited college of veterinary medicine. Preference will
be given to residents of New Jersey or other states that do not have a
veterinary school within their borders, and/or to students interested in
pursuing a career in animal health studies, shelter medicine, or
disaster preparedness and response efforts. Students must demonstrate
that they are enrolled in a college of veterinary medicine and in good
standing. A letter from the academic office of the school will serve as
verification. Students must complete a one paragraph statement (250
words or less) declaring why they are requesting the funds and why they
should be chosen for a scholarship. Applications must be postmarked by
May 15th. Applications available in 212 Trotter Hall.
New Brunswick Kennel Club
Scholarships
Scholarship will be in the amount of $2,500. Applicant must have
completed 2 or more years of veterinary school. Must complete
application and include two letters of reference (non-family personal
and academic), veterinary transcripts, and proof of NJ residency.
Applicant is judged based on demonstrated financial need, academic
excellence, letters of reference, community service and volunteer
activities, and career goals. Deadline June 1 of every year.
Applications available in 212 Trotter Hall.
North American Veterinary
Conference Travel Award
Award consists of paid expenses to travel to NAVC. In return the student
is expected to act as the student liaison for KSU at the conference.
Scholarship can be renewed. In the past students have been asked to
submit a 250 to 500 word essay explaining why they should be selected.
NAVC contacts us by letter if they choose to provide money to support a
student to travel to the conference in January.
Old Gray Dog Foundation
Students submit a 250-500 word (typed, double-spaced) essay regarding a
personal experience in administration of compassionate medical care to
an animal. Essays on euthanasia will not be accepted. Essays due
September 15th.
Pfizer Veterinary Scholarship
Award
Third year student who has a high level of academic achievement and a
financial need. Award usually consists of engraved plaque and $1,000.
Rhode Island Veterinary
Medical Association Veterinary Student Scholarship
The Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association (RIVMA) is proud to
offer a veterinary scholarship for veterinary students. A $1,000
scholarship will be awarded to a veterinary student in the spring of
their junior year at veterinary school. Applications available in 212
Trotter Hall. Below is the criteria for selection:
- Student must be a graduate of a Rhode Island high school
- Student must have resided in Rhode Island for at least three years
- Student must have a grade point average of at least 2.5 to apply
- Scholarship is open to veterinary students in their junior year to be applied
to their senior year.
Schooley's Mountain Kennel
Club Scholarships
Scholarship of at least $500 but not more than $1,000 will be awarded to
a student who has completed 2 years or more of veterinary school and is
a New Jersey resident. Must complete application (available in 212
Trotter Hall) and include two letters of reference (non-family personal
and academic), veterinary school transcripts, and proof of NJ residency.
Applicant will be judged based on demonstrated financial need, academic
excellence (at least 3.0 GPA), letters of reference, community service
and volunteer activities, and career goals. Deadline is June 1.
Simmons Educational Foundation
Award for Business Aptitude
Awarded to a third year veterinary student
who has demonstrated exceptional business aptitude as well as an
attitude that recognizes the importance of the business side of private
veterinary practice.
Somerset Hills Kennel Club
Scholarships
Two scholarships for junior or senior veterinary students.
Must be New Jersey residents (except for temporary University residency)
and their goals must be primarily geared towards canine medicine. Award
amounts range from $500-$1,500. Must complete application (available in
212 Trotter Hall) and include transcripts (both undergrad and vet
school), two letters of reference (personal and professional).
Southwest Kansas Cattle Women
Scholarship
The Kansas Cattle Women organization is offering $1,000
scholarships to college students majoring in a division of agriculture,
foods, and nutrition, and/or beef related area of study. The scholarship
will be evenly awarded over two semesters.
This scholarship is available to any student who will be working toward
a degree from a four-year university next fall, and whose permanent
residence is within the following Southwest Kansas counties: Clark,
Finney, Ford, Grant, Gray, Greeley, Hamilton, Haskell, Hodgeman, Kearny,
Lane, Meade, Morton, Ness, Seward, Scott, Stanton, Stevens, or Wichita.
The student must exhibit involvement with cattle production and plan to
promote the beef industry in the future. The recipient must be willing
to make or assist Southwest Kansas Cattle Women in making at least one
educational presentation on the cattle industry to an elementary
classroom, civic organization, or similar audience.
Applications for this scholarship are available in 212 Trotter Hall. The
application form and required transcripts must be post-marked by April
30th.
Western Veterinary Conference
Student Scholarship
Recipient shall be an outstanding leader, but also
has financial needs and is a member of the third year class. Award
usually consists of a $2,500 scholarship award and also the opportunity
to attend the largest veterinary meeting in the world by providing air
transportation, hotel accommodations, and allowance for meals. In the
past students have been asked to submit a brief essay explaining why
they feel they would make a good delegate to represent our school at the
Western Veterinary Conference.
Wilson, Saul t. Jr. Scholarship
Program (USDA-APHIS)
Students must be a US citizen, be enrolled in
veterinary school full-time in good academic standing, must have
completed NOT more than 1 year (18 semester or 27 quarter hours) of
veterinary school, agree to work for the agency during school breaks
(both summer and holiday periods). Application must contain the
following: resume (including current and summer addresses and telephone
numbers), transcripts of all college courses completed to date, letter
of acceptance to veterinary school, three letters of recommendation from
college officials (none related), an original essay by you not to exceed
500 words addressing this topic: "Why I should receive a Saul T. Wilson
Jr. Scholarship and what contributions I would make to APHIS, Veterinary
Services", and documentation if you have served in the U.S. Armed
Forces. Recipients receive up to $10,000 per year for school expenses,
paid employment during summers and school breaks, possibility of
conversion to a permanent appointment. Applications must be post-marked
