Student Scholarships and Awards

Spring Honors Banquet Awards

The following awards and scholarships are presented during the annual Honors Banquet for fourth year students during the spring semester.

Allan H. Hart/IDEXX Scholarship
Awarded to a fourth year student who displays exceptional proficiency in diagnostic clinical pathology.

American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Student Achievement Award
Awarded to a graduating AAHA student member chosen based on the student's proficiency in small animal medicine and surgery. The recipient receives five years of complimentary AAHA membership.

American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) Senior Recognition Award
Awarded to a fourth year student who demonstrates the highest dedication to feline medicine and surgery. Winner receives an award plaque and complimentary membership to AAFP for the remainder of the graduation year and the following calendar year.

American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists Clinical Proficiency Award
Awarded to a fourth year student exemplifying clinical proficiency in anesthesia. The award includes a one-year subscription to the journal, Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia.

American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists Award
Recipient will receive a complimentary one-year subscription to the Veterinary Ophthalmology Journal.

American College of Veterinary Radiology Award
Awarded to a fourth year student who excels in radiology. Student should have an enthusiasm for and understanding of diagnostic and therapeutic radiology.

American College of Veterinary Surgeons Large Animal Award
Awarded for demonstrated proficiency in large animal surgery. Student receives a check and a 12-month subscription to "Veterinary Surgery".

American College of Veterinary Surgeons Small Animal Award
Awarded for demonstrated proficiency in small animal surgery. Student receives a check and a 12-month subscription to "Veterinary Surgery".

American Royal Association Scholarship
For students who participate in the American Royal activities and have an interest in large animal veterinary medicine.

Animal Emergency Clinic of Omaha Excellence in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Award
Awarded to a senior student selected for their excellence in small animal emergency and critical care.

The Harry D. and Alberta F. Anthony Award in Veterinary Medicine
Support for a student who has demonstrated both interest and self-development in feedlot medicine. Student must have published or had an article accepted for publication related to bovine or swine medicine.

Rebecca L. Arnold Scholarship for Feline Medicine (All Feline Hospital Award)
Recipient will be a senior student who shows promise in feline medicine surgery.

Association of Avian Veterinarians Award
Recipient is fourth year student who shows interest/proficiency in avian and exotic animal medicine and surgery.

Auxiliary to the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association Scholarships
Award given to senior student who has contributed significantly to the SCAVMA.

Louis A. and Norma J. Ball Scholarship
The recipient shall be a student with an emphasis in a small animal medicine.

The Dr. Joseph A. Bogue Endowment Fund
Support for fourth year student in the CVM who has demonstrated exceptional achievement in nutrition as applied in companion animal therapeutics.

The Melba Cornwell Budge Endowment for Veterinary Medicine
Support for a fourth Year student who is cited for special proficiency and concern in providing health care to cats.

Wayne and Druecillia Burch Scholarship
Support for fourth year students in the upper 50% of their class who have a demonstrated interest in Food Animal Production Medicine.

The Paul and Phyllis Curd Scholarship
Support for a student with an emphasis in small animals.

The Dr. Richard M. and Pamela K. Debowes Professional Leadership Award
Recipient will be a senior student who has an exemplary academic record, a history of student leadership, and great potential to contribute to the profession because of their exceptional vision, work ethic, and professionalism.

Dr. R.R. and Karen Domer Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine
Support for a student pursuing a career in large animal practice. Preference to be given to a Kansas resident from a rural background. Preference to also be given to a married student, though single students aren’t excluded.

The Dennis A. Evans Memorial Scholarship Fund
Support for a third or fourth year student who demonstrates extraordinary compassion in the treatment and handling of clinical animals.

Dr. Hi Faubion Large Animal Tribute
Support for a fourth year student with interest in food animal production and/or equine medicine who has an interest in establishing or working in a large animal practice in a small community. Preference will be given to, but not limited to, students from Smith or Phillips counties in Kansas. If there are no students meeting the above criteria, then this scholarship will be given to a student based on character and educational abilities.

Fort Dodge Animal Health Excellence in Research Award
Fourth year student who has shown achievement in research.

The Dr. O.M. Franklin Epidemiology Award
Awarded to a fourth year student for demonstrated proficiency in epidemiology and public health.

The Dr. O.M. Franklin Theriogenology Award
Awarded to a fourth year student for demonstrated proficiency in theriogenology.

The Dr. O.M. Franklin Toxicology Award
Awarded to a fourth year student for demonstrated proficiency in toxicology.

Future Small Animal Specialist Award
Recipient is chosen by the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Small Animal Medicine Section and is given to a member of the graduating class who shows great promise as a future contributor to the practice of specialty medicine.

Gentle Doctor Award (Auxiliary to the SCAVMA, SOKS)
Recipient shall be a fourth year student who has demonstrated excellent communication skills with their clients. Students nominate potential recipients.

George Draeger Strength Through Adversity Scholarship
Support for a senior student who has demonstrated strength through adversity. Any student who is managing a physical or learning disability or who has prevailed over a life challenge is eligible for this scholarship.

Hill's Buddy Award
Award for fourth year student showing proficiency in small animal nutrition.

The Douglas Hoppas Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a fourth year student who is a Kansas resident and shows professionalism and leadership.

The Dr. and Mrs. Gordon C. Howell Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a fourth year student with outstanding proficiency in practice management and case records.

Irene and Marsh Plumlee Memorial Scholarship for Veterinary Medicine
Recipient will be fourth year student, with preference given to Kansas or Oklahoma residents who have a career interest in equine or large animal.

The Helen and William F. Irwin Scholarship Fund
Support for a fourth year student based on academic attainment in Small Animal Surgery and Surgical Anatomy, and demonstrated proficiency in Small Animal Surgery during their clinical years.

Jake and Betty Mosier Scholarship
Awarded to a fourth year student who is in good standing and demonstrates an interest in geriatrics and pediatrics.

The L. Derald and Mary Ellen Jernigan Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine
Recipient should exhibit an enthusiasm for veterinary medicine, a determination to achieve, and sensitivity to others.  Preference should be given to residents of Morris County, Kansas and then to Kansas residents with special interest in food/large animal medicine.

The Dr. Jody Johnson Veterinary Medicine Leadership Scholarship
Support for a female student who maintains a 2.8 GPA and is involved in student leadership (i.e. SCAVMA Officer, Ambassador, Class Officer, etc).

JTC (Jimmy-The-Cat) Award
Recipient shall be a fourth year student properly enrolled.  Selection should be based upon the student's diligence and compassion for life in the animal world.  It is the wish of the donors that these funds be used toward college expenses or moving to new jobs.

Kansas City Veterinary Medical Association Award in Radiology
Awarded to a fourth year student for demonstrated proficiency in radiology.

Kansas City Veterinary Medical Association Award in Compassionate Animal Care
Awarded to a fourth year student who demonstrates compassionate animal care.

The Dr. Kenneth R. Kimbell Memorial Scholarship
Recipient will be a third of fourth year student from Kansas with GPA of 3.0 or higher and intents to be in companion animal practice after graduation.

John S. Koen Memorial Award
Awarded to a student who has demonstrated proficiency in swine medicine and surgery.

The Frances Lucille Koss Memorial Scholarship
Recipient will be a fourth year who shows proficiency in small and large animal veterinary medicine.

Dr. Alvin A. Lidolph Memorial Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine
Awarded to the top student in the fourth year of the professional curriculum.

James T. Marsh Memorial Award in Veterinary Medicine
To support a fourth year student with a special interest in equine reproduction.

Dr. and Mrs. Nelson S. Mayo Memorial Food Animal Award
Awarded to a fourth year student who shows outstanding proficiency in food animal medicine and surgery.

Dr. and Mrs. Nelson S. Mayo Memorial Equine Award
Fourth year student who shows outstanding proficiency in equine medicine and surgery.

Dr. and Mrs. Nelson S. Mayo Memorial Exotic Animal Award
Fourth year student who shows outstanding proficiency in zoo and exotic animal medicine and surgery.

Merck Veterinary Manual Award
Graduating seniors on Dean's list receive complimentary copies of the Merck Veterinary Manual with their name imprinted on the book.

J. Sidney Michum Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a fourth year student who is practice oriented.

The Dr. Bishan Das and Ram Bai Minocha Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine
To support a fourth year student in good academic standing who has the top per class score in the curriculum of virology and has maintained an interest in virology.

The Marie Rediker Mohr Memorial Scholarship
To a fourth year student who is outstanding in their class.  Award will be based on recipient's knowledge of medicine, demonstrated skills, and compassion for patients.

Rodney K. Morgan Memorial Fund in Veterinary Medicine
To support a student who shows proficiency in the area of Clinical Pathology.

Dr. F.P. and Jane Moynagh Scholarship for Veterinary Medicine
To a fourth year student who demonstrates an interest in Practice Management.

Radar Mullet Scholarship for Clinical Excellence
The recipient of this scholarship will be a fourth year student who has attended Kansas State for all four years of their veterinary education.  The successful student must complete an essay with a minimum of 300 words that demonstrates hi/her medical proficiency, respect and support for the human-animal bond by providing VMTH clients with sensitivity, empathy and patience.  In addition, students must also illustrate anecdotally a high level of commitment and dedication to their patients.

Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation
Recipient shall be a fourth year student who has the potential to make future contributions in the field of comparative oncology (proficiency in comparative oncology).

Nestle Purina Award for Excellence in Companion Animal Nutrition
Award to student enrolled that has demonstrated excellence or interest in companion animal nutrition.  If this is not possible, then any student pursuing small animal medicine.

The Dr. John L. and Patricia L. Noordsay Student award for Proficiency in Food Animal Surgery
To a fourth year student who shows a demonstrated interest and proficiency in food animal surgery and anticipating an initial career in food animal surgery/medicine.

Novartis Ethicon Surgery Award (Soft Tissue)
The recipient should be a fourth year student who demonstrates proficiency in surgery.

Novartis Ethicon Surgery Award (Hard Tissue)
The recipient should be a fourth year student who demonstrates proficiency in surgery.

The Jay R. Olson Memorial Veterinary Medicine Award
Recipient will be a fourth year student who has an interest in mastitis in cows.

Outstanding Senior Award (offered by Auxiliary to the American Veterinary Medical Assoc.)
Recipient is student who has been outstanding in the prestigious advancement of veterinary medicine on our university campus.  Recipient must also be a member of the SCAVMA.  Recipient receives a congratulatory letter from the Auxiliary president, award certificate, and a check.

Pet Tribute Awards
Six spring semester scholarships in the amount of $3,500 each will be available to be awarded fourth year students.  Awarded to students who have demonstrated compassion and professionalism in support of clients who have suffered the loss of a pet.

Pfizer Animal Health Veterinary Specialty Team Awards
Three annual award for fourth year student who have demonstrated exceptional proficiency in one of five important disciplines (analgesia/anesthesia, dentistry, dermatology, internal medicine or emergency/critical care).

Pfizer Small Animal Clinical Proficiency Award
For demonstrated proficiency in small animal medicine

The Dr. Jerry R. Rains Memorial Scholarship
Recipient(s) will be fourth year students who have demonstrated a sincere interest in either beef cattle production medicine or equine reproductive physiology, as evidenced by stated career objectives, participation in research or case studies, and/or participation in appropriate society meetings and activities.  Recipients will have demonstrated leadership capabilities through active participation in student committees or extracurricular activities during their collegiate career.

Mary Reed Equine Compassion Fund
Annual awards will be given to members of the equine section staff, faculty, students, and house members, per the recommendation of the Clinical Science Department Head in consultation with the equine section leader and the Dean's Office.

The John H. and Mary Jo Cortelyou Rust Award Fund
Awarded to students on the basis of excellence, preferably in the areas of physiology and pharmacology.

Schering-Plough Animal Health Dermatology Award
Recipient will be a fourth year student who demonstrates proficiency in dermatology.

Schering-Plough Animal Health Small Animal Award
Recipient will be a fourth year student who demonstrates proficiency in small animal medicine.

Schering-Plough Animal Health Large Animal Award
Recipient will be a fourth year student who demonstrates proficiency in large animal medicine.

Dr. Don H. Spangler Merit Scholarship
To be awarded to a third or fourth year student who has been active in the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA) on a local/national level and has demonstrated the principles of veterinary ethics.

Student Surgical Proficiency Award in Small Animal Surgery (offered by American College of Veterinary Surgeons)
Awarded to a fourth year who shows proficiency in small animal surgery. The recipient will be selected based on academic and clinical proficiency in surgery and aptitude and interest in surgery.

Student Surgical Proficiency Award in Large Animal Surgery (offered by American College of Veterinary Surgeons)
Awarded to a fourth year who shows proficiency in large animal surgery. The recipient will be selected based on academic and clinical proficiency in surgery and aptitude and interest in surgery.

The Glenn Ray Teagarden Memorial Award in Equine Proficiency
Given annually at the Awards Banquet to the graduating senior most outstanding in Equine Medicine.

Donald M. and Marilyn B. Trotter Award
Recipient shall be a graduating senior with the highest GPA who has been admitted to graduate study in Anatomy or Morphological Pathology in College of Veterinary Medicine.

Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Award (VECCS)
Awarded to a fourth year student for proficiency in veterinary emergency and critical care.

Albert F. and Clara I. Wempe Memorial Scholarship
To support a fourth year student that has a minimum of a 2.5 GPA with an interest in a career as an equine practitioner.

The Wempe/Luckeroth Family Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine
Recipient shall be a senior with who exhibits financial need and has maintained a 2.5 GPA.
