Student Scholarships and Awards

Internal Scholarship Sources

The following awards are distributed based on specific designations, achievement, area of interest, and financial need. Information regarding individual student financial need is obtained from the Kansas State University Office of Student Financial Assistance. Students must complete the on-line scholarship application by September 1st, as indicated by the Associate Dean, to be eligible for these awards. Decisions regarding distribution of awards and scholarships are the responsibility of the College of Veterinary Medicine Awards and Scholarships Committee.

Arizona Equine Scholarship
Recipient will be properly enrolled and exhibits an interest in Equine Medicine. Scholarship will be $1,000 annually when funds are provided. Each scholarship shall be no less than $500 annually.

Ashbrook, Kathryn
Support for a student enrolled in CVM based on need.

ASR Ganta Award
One award is given to the best third-year DVM students after the completion of the second year courses successfully at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Award is $100 each to be used for books or other needs of the students who receive the award.

Beeman, Keith & Janet
Support for a 3rd year student with good academic standing pursuing an interest in theriogenology and demonstrates financial need. The amount of the scholarship is to be $1,000.

Bissell, Phebe Memorial Scholarships
Recipient shall be student(s) properly enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine and shall have financial need, good moral character, dedication to acquiring a good education, and shall not be recipient(s) of any athletic scholarships. Preference shall be given to candidates from the following counties in the State of Kansas in the order named: Phillips, Smith, Norton, and Rooks. In the event an appropriate candidate is not identified through the usual selection process in the above named counties, any qualified or worthy candidate from any other Kansas county or area is eligible.

Support for 1st year student based on need.

Bornholdt, Bret
Support for a student demonstrating an outstanding promise in the area of working/service dogs.

Boyd, Dr. James E. Scholarship
Recipient will be a Kansas resident and must be a first, second, or third year student properly enrolled in the CVM at KSU. First preference will be given to a student who reveals the greatest financial need. The applicant must also demonstrate a commitment to community involvement/volunteer work and intend to practice in small animal medicine, excluding exotic or zoo medicine interests.

Branson, Dr. Richard L. Honorary Scholarship
Recipient will be a student properly enrolled who will practice small animal care and is not to be awarded to a student who will enter the research field of veterinary medicine.

Burt, J H
Support for a student who best meets the requirements of exceptional ability in the anatomical technique of preparing or fabricating teaching specimens or material for use in classes of anatomy. Scholarship will be approximately $100 annually.

Byers Ranches Scholarship
Recipient will be a student properly enrolled. The scholarship will be based upon financial need. Also, the student must:

  • have been domiciled for at least 4 years in a “rural Kansas community” immediately prior to entry intro college and without an intervening period of work for more than 3 months in a community other than a “rural Kansas community”
  • be selected based upon academic achievement in college, having graduated from college with a minimum gpa of 3.0 and remain in good standing
  • have attended a Kansas college or university, not necessarily Kansas State University
  • sign a statement before the initial award of the scholarship, and before any subsequent renewal, which expresses the intention of the student to have a primary concentration of her/her practice focused upon large animals
  • follow a curriculum (including electives), at the College of Veterinary Medicine, which has a concentration or focus upon large animals
  • be supported by a faculty review in which the consensus opinion is that the student will probably have a major focus in his or her practice on large animals. This faculty review shall not be by letters of recommendation obtained or requested by the students, but by at least two members of the faculty selected by the scholarship recommendation committee (Dean or other appropriate body) to arrive at their assessment based upon their experience with and knowledge of the student, or personal interviews. This review shall be required before the initial grant of the scholarship, and before the grant of any renewal of the scholarship. The faculty appointed for the review must be selected from the College of Veterinary Medicine in contrast with other KSU faculty members.

Christian Veterinary Medicine Fellowship Travel Award
Support for student who is a Christian Veterinary Medicine Fellowship member at KSU. Funds will be provided for members to use on domestic or international trips to work with veterinarians.

Clark (Ross D.) Scholarship
Student properly enrolled in the College and in good standing.

Class of 1932
Support for a student properly enrolled in CVM and has received their elementary and secondary education in the State of Kansas. Grade point average and financial need are not to be considered.

Class of 1939
Support for a student enrolled at CVM based on need.

Class of 1967 Memorial Award
Recipient will be a deserving student properly enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Coffman, Harry T & Eleanor
Support for a 3rd Yr student who is in the upper 1/3 of their class with preference given to students who have graduated from a Kansas High School.

Coleman, E E & M E
Support for 4th Yr student ranked in the upper 30% of their class. Each scholarship will be the equivalent of the cost of one semester resident tuition for a veterinary medical student.

David M. Greene Loan
This loan fund is available to any veterinary medicine student at KSU.

Day, Florence D.
Support for student enrolled in CVM.

Dykstra, RR
Support for a student enrolled in CVM based on need.

Emery, Dr. and Mrs. Frederick E. Memorial Scholarship
Recipient is a student of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Direct descendants of Dr. and Mrs. Frederick E. Emery shall be given preference in the event they apply and are equally qualified.

Erickson (Emil & Ruth) Scholar
The recipient shall be a third-year student properly enrolled, pursuing a career in Dairy practices. Each scholarship will be $500 annually.

Feedlot Production Management Certificate Program
Award given to KSU vet students who are interested in earning 14 credits in the Feedlot Management Certification Program at KSU, years one through four are eligible. Award will cover the cost for up to eight students per year to enroll in the program. Contact Dr. Dan Thomson for more information.

Fortenberry, Jacob D
Support for travel for SCAVMA delegates to attend the annual meeting of AVMA and SAVMA.

Freeman, August K "Mike"
Support for students enrolled in CVM; preference to be given to a recipient from the state of New Jersey, New York or Ohio.

Gaddie Memorial Scholarship
Support for 3rd or 4th Yr student who is a Kansas resident, who has an interest in small animal medicine and surgery and ranks highly within the class per their scholastic achievement.

Garrett, Ed & Judy
Support for 1st year (second semester) student. If student maintains good academic standing he/she may retain funding for all years through DVM program. Consideration shall be given to recipients with greatest financial need from Wyandotte, Johnson, Leavenworth and Douglas counties, if no qualified applicant this will be open to students from anywhere in Kansas.

Griffing (William/Anna) Scholarship
The recipient should be properly enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Growney (Patrick J.) Vet Med Scholarship
First preference shall be given to a Military Veteran and second preference shall be given to residents of the State of NE.

Guilfoil, Thomas J. and Della C.
Support for 4th year students for travel and subsistence support for vet students pursuing approved off-campus elective courses in fulfillment of academic requirements for the 4th year rotational assignment. Contact Dr. Melinda Wilkerson for more information.

Hart, F L & Allene
To be used for any student enrolled in Vet Med.

Hauck, Earl B
Support for a 3rd year student, when possible should go to a student from Miltonvale, Kansas or the following counties in Kansas: Cloud, Mitchell, Ottawa, Washington, Jewel, Republic, Clay, Lincoln, Dickinson, Ellsworth and Saline.

Heartland Boston Terr Clb-DEV
Support for a student enrolled in the CVM who has an interest in small animals.

Hershberger, Col Frank C
Support for 4 or 5 of the neediest students enrolled in CVM.

Hicks, Dr. James and Carol Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship will be a student properly enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University. Preference will be given to a student who reveals the greatest financial need.

Hill's Pet Nutrition Diversity Fund
Recipient will be representative of minority cultures. Veterinary scholarships can be awarded to non-residents for up to $20,000 per year and to Kansas residents for up to $10,000 a year. All scholarships will be designated as renewable awards. Veterinary medicine awards will be renewable for four years. In order for these scholarships to be renewable, student(s) must remain in good academic standing and funding must be in place.

Hogg, Alex
Recipient will be a student properly enrolled with preference given to a student specializing in swine medicine.

Hornsby, W. S.
Support for a student enrolled in the CVM, and who received their elementary and secondary education in the State of Kansas.

Hudson, Harlow Kenyon
Support for 1st Yr student based on need.

Hundley, Dr. O.E. and Mildred L. Scholarship
Recipient(s) will be a student(s) properly enrolled in the CVM at KSU. First preference will be given to students from Nebraska.

Irwin, Helen R. Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine
Recipient will be a female student who is a senior in veterinary medicine, specializing in small animal practice. Said student should be from the state of Nebraska and exhibit financial need.

Irwin, Irvin P. Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship will be a 4th year Veterinary Medicine student who is a proven Kansas resident upon first year enrollment in Veterinary Medicine, demonstrates a proven work ethic, strong leadership skills and quality citizenship and is properly enrolled in the CVM at KSU. Preference will be given to a 4th year student who will practice large animal or mixed animal care. This scholarship will be $15,000 annually when funds are provided. One scholarship to one student.

Jarchow, Donald F
Support for student enrolled in CVM based on need.

Jerome, Dr. Charles A. Sr. Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine
Recipient will be a student properly enrolled. The donor further stipulates the following: no more than five students per year shall be granted scholarships and each scholarship shall not exceed $6,000, scholarship funds will be used solely for tuition - none may be used for athletics, due consideration shall be given to each applicant's academic achievement and financial situation.

Support for a student who has completed one or more semesters in DVM program based on need and are in top 15% of their class.

Jones, E. C.
Support for 4th Yr student. Qualifications may also include academic achievement, honesty, integrity, and extra-curricular activities that advance the image of the University or College and the veterinary profession.

Jones, W. L. Public Health
Support for 4th year student who exhibits interest in veterinary public health.

Jordan, Frank W & Gwen R
Support for a student from Dickinson or Mitchell Counties who have completed one or more semesters; based on need. Scholarships shall be $750 annually.

Kansas Veterinary Medical Association Foundation
Recipient(s) will be Kansas residents properly enrolled.

Keith (Thuraline) Exotic Zoo Med Scholarship
Student involved with Conservation and Research Center program in the Exotics Section of the College. If this program ceases to exist, students interested in exotic zoo medicine should be inconsideration.

Kelsall, Samuel
To any student enrolled at the College of Vet Med with a preference to any student interested in Food safety/inspection.

Kenyon (James/Cynthia)
Recipient shall be student properly enrolled, preference given to students from Kansas west of highway 81, and in top 25% of their class with financial need.

Kind, Robert
The recipient of this scholarship shall be a 3rd year student with financial need, properly enrolled. Recipient shall be selected based on his/her history of student leadership and potential to contribute to the profession because of his/her exceptional vision, work ethic, and professionalism. Recipient will be recognized among their peers as the student who exemplifies a future DVM who will show true compassion and integrity when working with clients and their owners. Each scholarship awarded will be no less than $1,000.

King, Daniel C. & Nancy L.
Support for 1st, 2nd or 3rd Yr student, preferably from Saline County, Kansas; Selection should be based on interest, aspirations and character but not solely on GPA.

Kruckenberg, Samuel M.
Support for student enrolled in CVM based on need.

Lassen, Keith O.
To support a DVM student with financial need.

Leader Dole
Recipient shall be a first year student who is a Kansas native properly enrolled in the CVM at KSU. Award is renewable for four years with the stipulation that the recipient has met all the prerequisites for the previous year and remains in good standing the second and succeeding years. To apply students submit a 250-500 word essay (typed, double spaced) about their past and present leadership positions and career goals. Students must tell the committee why they deserve to be selected for the scholarship. Students also include a very short autobiography stating where they were born and where they graduated from high school. Essays due September 30th. Distributed every four years.

Leasure, T. J.
To support a DVM student from Douglas County or a surrounding county, award is renewable to the same student for four years. Scholastic aptitude should be a criterion.

Leavenworth Kennel Club Scholarship
To support a DVM student demonstrating academic achievement and financial need.

Lichty, Gladys
To support a DVM student demonstrating need.

Liebengood, Howard B
Students properly enrolled at KSU, preference will be given to students from rural areas interested in large animal practice.

Lionel L. Reilly Honorary Scholarship
Recipient of this scholarship will be a student properly enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine at KSU. First preference will be given to an employee or child of an employee of Professional Veterinary Products, Ltd. Second preference will be given to a Nebraska resident. This scholarship is renewable for four years as long as the recipient meets the criteria for selection.

Little, Dr. Bruce W. Veterinary Leadership Scholarship
Recipient will be a student properly enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine at KSU. Preference will be given to a third year student who demonstrates leadership, is involved in activities and/or is active in the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Students must obtain a letter of recommendation from a current KSU College of Veterinary Medicine faculty member which will demonstrate the applicant's college involvement and leadership skills.

Lumb (Dr William V) Veterinary
First preference shall be given to a student with a least 50% native American descent. Second preference shall be given to a KS student who is the first generation from their immediate family to attend college. This scholarship will be $4,000 annually when funds are available.

Magrath (Leo) Scholarship
Recipient properly enrolled and in need of financial assistance to attend college. This scholarship shall be no less than $3,000 annually and is to be awarded to one student recipient.

Mayo, Nelson S. (Fall)
Any needy students enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine

McCleod, William
Awarded to second year student who attained the highest gpa in microanatomy and gross anatomy.

McNamara, James B.
To support a 4th year student, ranked in the upper half of the class (academically) are ineligible. Recipient should exhibit both desire and effort to become a veterinarian and have financial need.

Meredith, Hugh & Beulah
To support a DVM student from Lincoln or Montgomery County, KS, with an interest in working with a large or mixed vet practice with leadership in both classroom and clinical studies. Preference will be given to a student who has been active in community service. This scholarship will be $5,000 annually.

Mid-America Pet Association
Three-quarters of the earnings from this endowment shall be awarded to a fourth year student properly enrolled in the CVM who ranks in the top 50% of his/her class. The remaining one quarter of earnings shall be awarded to a third year student in the CVM who ranks in the top 50% of his/her class. Preference shall be given to students who graduated from high schools in the Northeast quadrant of Kansas.

Miller, Pathology
To support a 3rd year student based on "interest and aptitude" in pathology and who participates in college and university activities. Academic achievement should not be the only criterion. A certificate is to be presented to the recipient with the monetary award. This should be awarded at Phi Zeta Day.

Mosier Family
To support a DVM student in the College of Vet Med. The potential recipients may be expanded to students in other colleges at KSU should the sum of $5,000 be designated by one or more donors.

Nauheim, Charles W & Lois H
The recipient of this scholarship will be 2nd, 3rd or 4th year student with specific interest in small animal medicine, the student will have resided in the state of Kansas for 10 years, have maintained a 3.0 grade point average, and demonstrate financial need. Award will be no more than the amount of tuition and fees.

Nebraska Academy of Veterinary Medicine Scholarships
Recipients will be students properly enrolled in the CVM at KSU. First preference will be given to a 3rd year veterinary student who is a Nebraska resident and reveals the greatest financial need. Second preference will be given to a 2nd year veterinary student, who is a Nebraska resident and reveals the greatest need. Two scholarships will be awarded each year in the amount of $1,000 each.

Nesbitt, Paul M. & Norma
To a DVM student in CVM enrolled at the College of Vet Med with an interest in Large Animal Pathology and/or Research.

New Mexico Veterinary Medical Association Memorial Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship will be a student from the state of New Mexico who is properly enrolled.

Nichols Scholarship
To support a 3rd or 4th year veterinary students or graduate students who have demonstrated a sincere interest in research or training in the area of Public Health.

Olson Brothers Endowed Scholarship
Recipient will be a student or students properly enrolled in the CVM at KSU who are residents of Nebraska and have an interest in large animal practice, specifically those with an interest in food animal and dairy practice. This scholarship is renewable.

Orazem & Scalora Engineering PA Scholarship
The recipient shall be a 3rd or 4th year student properly enrolled.

Otto, Alberta Davida
Student properly enrolled in CVM at KSU and has a 3.65 GPA and an interest in small animal medicine. Selection should be made based on his/her history of student leadership and potential to contribute to the profession because of his/her exceptional vision, work ethic, and professionalism.

Palmquist, Dorothy
Recipients shall be students properly enrolled.

Palmquist, Norman E.
Recipient shall be any student enrolled who is in need of scholarship assistance to continue his/her studies. Scholarship shall be $350 annually each year in which the income is sufficient to award.

Paulsen (Cecil L/Maureen H) Scholarship
The recipient shall be properly enrolled who has completed at least one semester in livestock production. Recipient shall not be chosen on grade point standings. Any recipient found guilty of a felony/misdemeanor offense while receiving this scholarship shall not be considered for reapplication and shall not continue to receive the award. This scholarship shall be the equivalent of full tuition and books for an academic year to the selected recipient(s).

Paulson, Greg & Robin
To support a 3rd year student properly enrolled with interest in large and small companion animal care.

Pet Trust Fund (Education) (Fall)
Nine fall semester scholarship to be awarded as follows: Three scholarships at $1,000 each to 1st year students, three scholarships at $1,000 each to 2nd year students, three scholarships at $1,000 each to 3rd year students. Applicants will write and submit a 500 word essay discussing the student's role related to the human-animal bond. These scholarships may be renewable as long as the criteria is met. (These changes made 4/5/2007 for the 2007-2008 academic year).

The recipient should be properly enrolled in the professional curriculum in the College of Vet Med at KSU.

Rice, Ethel & Raymond F.
To support a student enrolled in the college of Vet Med with a minimum GPA of 3.0 with preference given to a student with financial need who is preferably a resident of Douglas County.

Ridgway, Dr. Robert and Carolyn Scholarship
Recipient will be a student properly enrolled in the CVM at KSU and reveals greatest need of financial assistance.

Riedl, Jay D.
To support a 3rd year student who has distinguished him/herself through scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and professional attitude that advances the image of Kansas State University and the CVM.

Rod Simpson Memorial
Award in Veterinary Medicine Recipient shall be a sophomore student properly enrolled in the CVM, award shall be made primarily based on financial need and preference given to students from Arizona.

Rogers, William W.
Recipient(s) will be students who are residents of Wisconsin.

Salina Kennel Club-DEV
To support a 3rd or 4th year student. Amount of award to be a maximum of $300 per academic year, payable to the recipient in amounts of $150 at the beginning of each of the two semesters of the academic year for which the award is granted.

Savage, Frances A. and Marvin D. & A. Francis Nelson
To any Nebraska student enrolled at the College of Vet Med exhibiting financial need with an interest in small animal and/or equine medicine. If there are not students meeting this requirement, the recipients shall be Nebraska or Kansas students with interests in small animal or equine medicine.

Scoby, Melvin F. (Doc) and Dorothy Scholarship
Recipient will be a student properly enrolled in the CVM at KSU.

Snyder, Hattie
Recipient shall be a worthy student properly enrolled.

Spencer, Paul L DVM Scholarship
To support a DVM vet student.

Spencer, R. H.
To a 3rd year student who ranks in the upper 1/2 of the class or a standout 2nd year student with a major interest in food animal practice; first preference shall go to a native of western Kansas who has exhibited financial need to continue studies, second preference shall go to a native Nebraskan and 3rd to a native Oklahoman who meet all above eligibility. Donors have requested that one scholarship will be awarded annually.

Sullivan, John & Lavonne H.
Recipient shall be a student from Nebraska who is properly enrolled. Preference shall be given, but not limited to, a first year veterinary medicine student with need. Recipient must be pursuing an education focused on small animal practice.

Swift, Seth S.
Recipient shall be a worthy student properly enrolled.

Telefund Scholarship
For students who participate in the annual Telefund Fundraising event, usually $100-$150 per student

Telefund Scholarship (Agriculture Career)
Recipients shall be students properly enrolled. 80% will be used for scholarships in the CVM and 20% will be designated to the general VM endowed account. Of the 80% used for scholarships, up to ten $2,500 per year 4-year scholarships will be designated for first-year veterinary medical students intending to enter careers in agriculturally-related veterinary medicine. See folder for very specific application details. Send out e-mail September 1, deadline is September 1. Scholarships are renewable. Basis for renewal will be a 500-word progress report.

The Salsbury Endowment for Scholarships in Veterinary Medicine
To 4th year students ranked academically in upper 30% of their class. Each scholarship will be the equivalent of the cost of one year's resident tuition for a veterinary medical student. Potential recipient's records will be reviewed PRIOR to their fourth year of study.

Theede (Agnes I) Memorial/Lyons Vet Clinic
Recipient(s) will be a student properly enrolled. First preference shall be given to students from Rice and Ellsworth counties in Kansas. Should there be no candidates from Rice and Ellsworth counties, the scholarship committee will allocate, in equal amounts, scholarships not less than $1,000 to students from Kansas. This scholarship is to be renewable only to those students from Rice and Ellsworth counties. The scholarship committee will review the qualifications annually and disperse the earnings per the designation of the donor each year.

Theobald, William R. & Betty H.

Thuraline Keith Scholarship
Student interested in small animal practice. First preference shall be given to students from Harper, Kingman, Barber or Sumner counties in Kansas. Second preference shall be given to students from Kansas.

Ungles, James M.
To support a DVM student who is a resident of Grant or Haskell County properly enrolled in the CVM at KSU.

Veterinary Clinical Pathology Scholarship
Award will be given to one recipient annually. Recipient will be properly enrolled and will be chosen based on DMP Course 775. Said recipient should be in the top 10% of the class and consistently demonstrates a desire to learn during the course. Award will be $350.

Voirol, Eula C.
Students should be properly enrolled in CVM at KSU with preference to be given to students who achieve above average grades and who demonstrate strong financial need. Annual contributions will be made by the Eula C. Voirol Trust sufficient to provide at least one $3,000 scholarship each year.

Walters, William T. and Susan
To any student who qualifies as an in-state student, Kansas/Nebraska, with financial need. Recipient will review form CVM-A-07 between the Lied Animal Shelter and the CVM. Student will complete three externships in an animal shelter during their four-year education. Preference will be given to a student with educational and professional interest in high volume surgery and humane animal care. See MOU - lots of additional details

Williams, Glenn L & S Josephine Memorial
Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine Recipient shall be a student properly enrolled. Said recipient must be female, demonstrate true financial need and meet all academic requirements as set forth by the general scholarship committee.

Zwierzychowski, Raymond Joseph and Louise Caroline Memorial Scholarship
Recipient shall be properly enrolled, award based on financial need.
