Pre-Professional Requirements

Whether the pre-professional education is completed at Kansas State University or at another academic institution, the following courses must be completed as minimal preparation:

Expository Writing I and II 6 hours
Public Speaking 2 hours
Chemistry I and II 8 hours
General Organic Chemistry and Laboratory 5 hours
General Biochemistry 3 hours
Physics I and II 8 hours
Principles of Biology or Zoology 4 hours
Microbiology and Laboratory 4 hours
Animal Genetics 3 hours
Social Sciences and/or Humanities 12 hours
Electives 9 hours
Total 64 hours

All science courses (chemistry, physics, biology, and genetics must have been taken within six years of the date of enrollment in the professional program.

To be considered as a candidate the applicant must have attained a 2.8 GPA in the pre-professional requirements and in the last 45 hours of undergraduate college work. A grade less than “C” in a required pre-professional course is not acceptable.

The Graduate Record Examination General Test must be taken by each qualified applicant.

Each professional student is currently selected on the basis of his/her academic record, interview score, animal experience, veterinary experience, references, essay, and extracurricular activities. The raw application score for each candidate is currently derived as follows:

GPA (35 hours of required science courses) 30%
Graduate Record Examination 40%
Interview and Application 30%

The application process is constantly under review and revisions are made as the Admissions Committee deems necessary.
