Birthing Center, American Royal

Each year, faculty and students from the College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University, facilitate the birthing center at the American Royal in Kansas City. This is a high profile activity for the College which is organized by Dr. Rod Christmas. At the American Royal, which represents one of the major livestock expositions in the country, the birthing center is the most popular exhibit. Children and their parents observe and handle newborn piglets and chickens. They also may witness the birthing process. Senior veterinary medical students provide the veterinary care for these animals, as well as answer questions from the public and supervise the handling of the newborn animals. These pictures were taken November 3, 1999 when 3500 people including children, their parents, and FFA members, passed through the birthing center.
