Pfizer Animal Health Award for Research Excellence
Dr. Michael J. Kenney received his bachelor’s degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, in 1981 and his PhD. from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, in 1988. Dr. Kenney was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan form 1988 until 1990. Dr. Kenney was an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, from 1990 until 1992. In 1992 Dr. Kenney came to the Department of Anatomy and Physiology as an Assistant Professor. In 1996 he was promoted to an Associate Professor. Dr. Kenney’s major areas of research interest include the organization of central circuits involved in the formulation of complex patterns of sympathetic nerve outflow during various physiological and pathological states, arterial blood pressure and sympathetic neural control by forebrain and brain stem rhythm generators, and neurocircuitry involved in mediating sympathetic nerve responses to immune activation. Dr. Kenney is a peer reviewer for several professional journals and a member of the American Physiological Society, Society for Neuroscience, and the American Heart Association. Dr Kenney has authored or co-authored more than thirty refereed journal articles and thirty abstracts. Dr. Kenney has obtained significant extramural research funding and has presented scientific papers at many prestigious meetings. The Pfizer Animal Health Award for Research was presented to Dr. Kenney during the Annual College of Veterinary Medicine Phi Zeta Banquet earlier this spring.
