Interests and Responsibilities

Since joining the faculty at KSU in 2007, Dr. Pohlman has had a variety of roles. For her first 13 years at KSU she provided the majority of the diagnostic clinical pathology service. For 10 of those years she served as Director of the Clinical Pathology Laboratory. The role she is most passionate about though, and focuses much of her time on now is teaching. Through didactic lectures, laboratories, small group discussions and one-one-one mentorship, she has contributed to the education of thousands of future veterinarians as well as mentored numerous interns, residents, and graduate students. She is also dedicated to helping veterinarians, long after the formal teaching has ended and she acts as a permanent resource for former students, interns and residents, as well other veterinarians as via her numerous clinically relevant publications and speaking engagements at local, national and international meetings.
In 2017, Dr. Pohlman took a 6-month sabbatical to broaden her expertise and credentials in online and hybrid teaching; she completed 2 teaching certificates through the Online Learning Consortium. She fully applied her skills during the COVID crisis.
Although her area of specialty is clinical pathology, Dr. Pohlman also contributes to the profession by volunteering her time to shelter medicine. In 2010, she worked with the KSU CVM students to begin the shelter medicine club and acted as the faculty advisor of that club for 5 years until a formal shelter medicine program was instituted at the CVM. Since 2012, she has served (and is currently serving) as President and Medical Director of the Riley County Humane Society (RCHS). As well, she has combined her dual roles as RCHS leader and teacher and worked to provide numerous veterinary and pre-veterinary students with animal handling experience.
Her research interests include improvement of clinical pathology laboratory methods and identification and characterization of disease in domestic species, particularly in shelter/rescue animals, as well as pets owned by individuals who cannot afford routine veterinary care. She is also interested in educational research to improve knowledge, as it exists toward pedagogy and educational systems as a whole.
