Small Animal Medicine & Surgery Internship:
The small animal internship at the Kansas State University
Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is a 12-month post-DVM clinical program.
Interns rotate between medicine and surgery services with additional time spent in
radiology, ophthalmology, and anesthesia. Other elective rotations may be
available, including dentistry, exotics, dermatology and oncology. Interns work
closely with board certified clinicians in many specialties. All interns will participate
in after-hours emergency duty on a rotating basis and will remain in the hospital
overnight when required for care of intensive care cases. The medical and surgical senior
faculty are committed to providing consultation and back-up support for the house officers
taking emergency duty.
Participation in daily clinical rounds and scheduled house officer
rounds is mandatory. From these experiences, the intern will gain knowledge and
proficiency in presenting clinical case material. All interns will be required to
prepare and present one seminar.
Interns focus on providing clinical service under the supervision of
senior clinicians, and on learning through consultation with radiologists, clinical and
anatomic pathologists, and other clinical and basic science specialists. Interns are
encouraged to interact with their clinical mentors to set additional personal goals, such
as case studies, case reports, and participation in ongoing research. Interns will
not be enrolled in graduate programs nor do they take graduate courses.
The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is a modern, spacious
facility on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. The
University is in the beautiful Flint Hills of Kansas, with numerous recreational
opportunities available.
It is an expectation that all interns be present for the orientation
session occurring on the first day(s) of employment.
Kansas State University is an equal opportunity employer. KSU
actively seeks diversity among its employees.
Intern and resident candidates are
selected through the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians (AAVC)
Veterinary Intern and Resident Matching Program (VIRMP). Information
about position availability, program descriptions and forms needed to
apply can be found at the
VIRMP web site.
