The Ophthalmology residency offered by the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is usually a three year to five year program which combines residency clinical training with graduate work leading to the MS or PhD Degree. The goal of the program is to prepare the resident clinically and scientifically so they will be able to pursue an academic career of the highest quality. During the training program the resident will become qualified to take the board examination of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) and will have completed the course work and research needed to defend for a MS of PhD degree. This intense training program requires the successful applicant to have established an excellent academic record and to have achieved intern level or greater clinical competency. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in academics.
The resident/graduate program is directly supported by two Diplomates of the ACVO, and a veterinary technician. The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital has an excellent case load for residency training and offers exposure to all domestic species as well as exotics. The Ophthalmology service in part of the Surgery section and has state of the art diagnostic and surgical equipment.
In addition to the veterinary ophthalmologists, Kansas State University has eight other faculty who are actively involved in ocular research. Interdepartmental cooperation among this group gives a resident/graduate student the potential to become involved in research areas in tear film defense mechanisms, ocular microbiology, retinal biochemistry, and lens biochemistry. The College of Veterinary Medicine and the Ophthalmology service have established good working relationships with local ophthalmologists and optometrists as well as the University of Kansas Medical Center and comparative ophthalmology experiences are available.
The annual reappointment of the resident is contingent upon continued satisfactory performance in all aspects of the program.
