Director, Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. Cornell University, Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC), Senior Research Associate, Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences. The successful candidate will be in residence at the Animal Health Diagnostic Center, located in Ithaca, NY and will be a member of the academic faculty of the college of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. The AHDC id the only full-service, multidisciplinary animal-disease diagnostic facility in the State of New York. It is dedicated to improving animal health and preventing infectious diseases or conditions that might have impact on human health. Qualifications include: PhD in Molecular Biology or related field or a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree; minimum of 5 years of experience in molecular methods and technologies; training and experience in animal diseases and animal disease diagnostic is strongly preferred. Methods development and test validation is one focus of this position. A minimum of 3 years of progressively increasing management and supervisory training and experience including personnel and budget management is needed. The successful applicant must possess excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Duties and Responsibilities: The primary responsibility of the position is to oversee the activities of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory (MDL) of the AHDC. This includes providing leadership and vision to meet the current demands an the MDL as well as determining future direction needed to keep the laboratory on the leading edge of diagnostic technologies and techniques. The Director will be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues within the AHDC, College and University to develop, validate and implement new testing methods, technologies, reagents or protocols according to the AAVLD standards. The Director will supervise personnel matters within the MDL including hiring, training, evaluations, promotions and disciplinary actions as needed in a timely, effective and professional manner; manage expenditures of the MDL to meet program goals and beget targets; seek opportunities to expand MDL testing services for internal and external clients; ensure adherence of the MDL to all applicable Quality System protocols and procedures, AAVLD accreditation standards, test performance and turnaround time standards; maintain all necessary training and certifications for the MDL to qualify for participation in the National Animal Health Laboratory System at the Core Lab level. The Director will also keep abreast of developing technologies and protocols in the area of molecular methods that might apply to diagnostic sciences; actively participate in the AAVLD and similar organizations involved in diagnostic sciences, veterinary medicine, infectious or genetic animal disease research and development; publish case reports, methods development results or other significant findings, date or developments in peer-reviewed journals, scientific meetings or lay publications and participate in the Diagnostic Sciences portion of the teaching rotation for DVM students as well as the Diagnostic Sciences Residency program. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
