Position Title: University Veterinarian Department: VP Research Admin Position Summary: Provides institutional level guidance and oversight which is consistent with federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to university veterinary care, animal facilities and animal welfare for Auburn University's Animal Care and Use Program. Essential functions include, but are not limited to: provides university-wide oversight for animal welfare including the application of professional veterinary knowledge ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations; provides university-wide oversight for animal facilities to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and serves in a leadership capacity in defining additional facilities for animal use; provides formal training, instruction, and consultation for investigators and personnel who work with animals, are developing animal use protocols, or who maintain animal facilities; oversees and coordinates a review of animal-use protocols prior to their submission to Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) for committee review and approval; provides professional support and consultation to the Director of Research Compliance on issues related to animal care and use and facility maintenance and supports the university's animal care and use program through service on the IACUC; administers and oversees the day-to-day activities of the Office of the University Veterinarian and the Biological Research Facility; administers a program for monitoring investigator activity that contributes to the institutional post approval program for IACUC approved protocols; participates in outreach activities, to include an effort to educate the public sector on the contributions of animal research to the health and well-being of human beings and animals; provides technical assistance, where interest exists, in the development or maintenance of accreditation status by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC); and assists in the development and oversight of an institutional program for monitoring the use of Investigational New Animal Drugs. Full supervisory responsibility for other employees is a major responsibility and includes training, evaluation, and making or recommending pay, promotion or other employment decisions. A Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an accredited institution in Veterinary Medicine and 5 years experience in Veterinary Medicine, research practices and protocols, and managing the care of animals. Prior experience in laboratory animal medicine and administration is required. Knowledge of veterinary medicine, laws and regulations applicable to animal use and housing for different species, personnel management, and accounting principles is required. Strong interpersonal and written communication skills are also required. The ability to interact effectively with colleagues is essential. Excellent time management and organization skills are required. Must be licensed as a veterinarian or eligible for licensure in the State of Alabama.

The Clinical Sciences Department of Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is seeking candidates for the position of Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH). The successful applicant reports directly to the Head of the Department of Clinical Sciences and sits on the CVM Executive Committee along with Chairs of academic departments, Director of Scott-Ritchey Research Center and Associate and Assistant Deans. The Director provides the vision and leadership required to ensure the VTH remains a high-caliber service-oriented unit that fulfills its mission in professional service and support of teaching and research. The Director is responsible for the management and operation of the VTH and must be an effective communicator who can work collaboratively with stakeholders, both within and outside of the University to promote the VTH and its mission. The Director also maintains hospital budget related to daily operations of the VTH, manages information technology operations associated with hospital and patient operations, directs the security, biosecurity and infection control programs as well as ensures the security of controlled substances. Additional responsibilities include participation in oversight of construction projects, farming operations, and maintenance and safety of equipment, facilities and vehicles. The Director supervises others with full supervisory responsibility. The minimum qualifications include a DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited institution of Veterinary Medicine and seven years experience in veterinary medicine.
