The clinical pathologists
share instructional responsibilities in Clinical Pathology (DMP 775,
2nd year) and Laboratory Diagnosis (DMP 777, 3rd year) in the veterinary curriculum. The major
goals of DMP 775 are for students to acquire the knowledge and
skills needed to interpret laboratory data correctly and to use
laboratory data to understand the pathogeneses of disorders of
domestic mammals. Instructional strategies of case-based learning
are used to provide relevance and motivation. Objectives (learning
outcomes) for the course are available. (Instructional
Objectives). The major goal of DMP 777
is for students to develop “entry level” professional proficiency
for urinalysis, manual CBC procedures, diagnostic microscopic
analysis of cells and body fluids, and general laboratory methods.
The clinical pathologists coordinate
instruction in clinical pathology section of Diagnostic Medicine (DMP
785). The clinical pathology residents are the primary instructors
in the case-based learning exercises.
As program coordinator, I work
with the other clinical pathologists to provide guidance,
mentoring, and instruction for the pathology residents who are
seeking certification as veterinary clinical pathologists.
As director of the
Clinical Pathology Laboratory, I work with the other clinical
pathologists, clinical pathology residents, medical technologists,
and other laboratory personnel to provide clinical
laboratory services for veterinarians within the College of
Veterinary Medicine or for practicing veterinarians. The Clinical
Pathology Laboratory also provides clinical laboratory assays to
support clinical and experimental investigations.
For non-directed service, I participate in the
academic and professional communities by serving on committees, task
forces, and other groups. Since 2002, I’ve organized the involvement
of K-State faculty in the Wakonse Conference of College teaching (
http://wakonse.org ). Since 2004,
I’ve served as an invited reviewer of the certifying examination of
the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology.
My research involves the
identification and characterization of spontaneous diseases via
clinical laboratory methods or the improvement of clinical
laboratory methods.
