As an assistant professor of
food safety and security, I conduct scholarly activities related to
trade policy, economic history and the history of science,
international political economy, and multidisciplinary research and
writing. Having studied in North America as well as the United
Kingdom (PhD, University of Guelph, 2003; Postgraduate Diploma in
Public Health, University of Edinburgh, 2000; MSc, London South Bank
University, 2000; BS, Kansas State University, 1998), I have a
long-standing interest in international relations. Along with Dr.
Jason Ackleson of New Mexico State University, I coordinate
Frontier—an interdisciplinary program for the historical studies of
border security, food security, and trade policy ( http://fss.k-state.edu/frontier/ ).
There is much we can learn
from history; I am interested in both historical and contemporary
trade-policy questions. My publications and lectures focus on an
array of issues: the World Trade Organization (WTO), the WTO
Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures,
veterinary history, the history of public health, North American
border issues, and the history of trade disputes regarding food
safety and animal disease.
As co-director of the website
for Food Safety and Security at Kansas State University (
http://fss.k-state.edu ),
I have helped create online educational resources and multimedia
(e.g., documentary-styled video clips) products.
I presently serve as
co-instructor for the graduate course Multidisciplinary Thought and
Presentation (DMP 815), and am actively involved with both on-campus
and distance education in the areas of food science, food safety,
and food security.
