The August K. Freeman Endowed Scholarship Established

     August (Mike) Freeman

Dr. Lisa C. Freeman and her stepmother, Barbara Freeman, have made a generous initial contribution of $20,000 to the Kansas State University Foundation to establish The August K. (Mike) Freeman Endowed Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine.

“I wanted to make a lasting impression to honor the memory of my father and education was always very important to him,” said Dr. Freeman.

The August K. Freeman Endowed Scholarship will be awarded in the fall of 2001.  The purpose of the scholarship is to honor the memory of August (Mike) Freeman and to provide financial assistance to students in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University.  The recipient of the scholarship will be a student enrolled in the professional curriculum of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University.  Preference will be given to a recipient from the states of New York or Ohio.

“My father and mother were from New York, and I was born there.  My second family, my stepmother and her children, are from Ohio.  We recognize that there is a significant financial burden on non-resident students at the KSU-CVM.  We wanted to make it easier for an out-of-state student to achieve their goals,” said Dr. Lisa C. Freeman.

August K. (Mike) Freeman was a television repairman who was very enthusiastic and supportive of his daughter’s education.   According to Dr. Freeman, “My parents helped me as much as they could financially, and in every other way.  I received a lot of support and encouragement from my dad.  He told me that I could do anything if I worked hard enough.  And he was always there for me.  He attended all my horse shows, and visited me on dairy farms.  However, I don’t think he particularly liked large animals.”

Dr. Lisa C. Freeman is currently an Associate Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at the KSU College of Veterinary Medicine.   She earned her BS, MS, and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Cornell University.  Additionally, she earned a PhD in Pharmacology from The Ohio State University.

The KSU Foundation coordinates fundraising efforts with alumni, friends, corporations and foundations to encourage private support for the University’s benefit.
