Use of Instant Messaging

• The CVM Computing Handbook states:

"The use of Instant Messaging programs within the College of Veterinary Medicine is limited to the program(s) approved by the CVM Technology Advisory Committee. In addition, the approved IM program(s) should not be used to read or send e-mail, or to transfer files of any type between users. Users desiring to communicate via IM should be using machines that have the approved antivirus software installed and active, along with the current antivirus signatures."  

• The approved IM program at CVM is MSN Messenger, which can be downloaded from Microsoft.

• During installation, be sure to uncheck the following boxes when asked:

       

• Be sure to have Symantec Antivirus installed and up-to-date, with TECH1 set as the parent server.

• Make sure that all available Windows Critical Updates have been installed.

• Please use MSN Messenger for Instant Messaging only.  For security purposes, NEVER use MSN Messenger to share files or to send/read e-mail.
