Adoption of Research Animals

The College of Veterinary Medicine has adopted a policy regarding the adoption of animals used in research and teaching. This policy may be viewed at http://www.vet.ksu.edu/policy/adoption.htm. Should an investigator wish to place their animals for adoption at the end of the study, these plans should be included in their IACUC application and the request should be coordinated with the ARF veterinary staff to ensure that all applicable laws and regulations have been met.

Regulations Governing Animal Care

ARF is required by federal regulation to follow specific standards and procedures outlined by the following agencies:

  • National Institutes of Health – Office Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW)

  • United States Department of Agriculture, Animal Welfare Act

  • Public Health Service, PHS Policy and U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research and Training

  • American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), Guide for the Care and Use of laboratory Animals
