Dr. Walter C. Bowie is dean emeritus, interim associate dean for administration, and
professor, Department of Physiology and Pharacology at Tuskegee University's School of
Veterinary Medicine, Tuskegee, Alaska.
Bowie earned a doctor of
veterinary medicine degree from K-State in 1947, a master's degree in mammalian physiology
and biochemistry in 1955, and doctorate in mammalian physiology, biochemistry and
endocrinology in 1960, both from Cornell University. He also completed additional studies
at Cornell and Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies, and completed postdoctoral studies
at the University of Michigan. In 1979, Bowie was a scholar-in-residence at Howard
University. He also received a doctor of science degree from K-State in1984.
Bowie began his career in 1947 as an instructor in the Department of
Physiology and Pharmacology, School of Veterinary Medicine, at Tuskegee University. He was
promoted to assistant professor in 1950 and became associate professor and head of the
department in 1955. Bowie was professor and head of Tuskegee's Department of Physiology
from1960 to 1971, and served as a visiting professor at the School of Medicine and
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Howard University between 1965 and 1989. He later
became dean of the University's School of Veterinary Medicine in 1972, and served in that
capacity for 18 years.
Bowie, whose areas of special interest are cardiovascular and
ruminant physiology and university administration, has written a multitude of articles for
prominent medical publications.
His honors include a Presidential Citation from Meharry Medical
College, selection for NAMME Southern Regional Award from the National Association of
Medical Minority Educators, selection for Outstanding Educators of America, Who's Who in
America, and Distinguished Scholar in National Academy of Practice in Veterinary Medicine.
