Dr. William Brown
Currently Dr. William Brown,
ACVPM, serves as a Health Services Veterinarian, Monsanto Choice
Genetics, A Monsanto Company in St. Louis, Missouri. He has overall
responsibility for the health management of several swine farms in the
United States and Canada. His responsibilities include creating and
implementing plans for diagnostics, periodic herd health audits,
maintaining brucellosis validated and pseudorabies qualified negative
sites, providing technical support to sales and marketing personnel,
vaccination and medication procedures, and supporting customer
service. The job allows Dr. Brown to facilitate interaction with a
large number of people across many different disciplines in fields of
production, food safety, epidemiology, diagnostics, genetics,
biotechnology, academia, research, regulatory medicine, and other
entities of the scientific community.
The United States Army Reserve (USAR)
attracted Dr. Brown early on in his academic studies. He entered the
USAR through the Early Commissioning Program in January of 1968,
starting a 35-year career where he achieved the rank of Colonel. After
graduation from K-State, he spent over two year’s active duty as
Deputy Commander, Medical Department Activities, at Ft. Wolters,
Texas. He then served in various staff and command officer positions
across the country. During Desert Shield/Desert Storm, in 1991, he
spent from January through July, at Ft. Detrick, Maryland, working on
the Equine Botulism Project. It was a scientific team effort producing
hyper-immune equine plasma for producing human tetanus antitoxin. "It
was an opportunity to work in the management and coordination of a
large scientific project, coming directly from the Joint Chiefs of
Staff, producing a desired outcome in a short period of time," noted
Dr. Brown. Augsburg, Germany, from July through December, 1996, was
his next active duty assignment. It was in support of Operation Joint
Endeavor to backfill for those serving in Bosnia. His last active duty
assignment to date was from March through September of 2002, in
support of Operation Enduring Freedom, with the Department of Defense,
Veterinary Service Activity, Office of the Surgeon General, Falls
Church, Virginia.
Dr. Brown's current reserve duty
assignment is Assistant to Veterinary Corps Chief, Mobilization &
Reserve Affairs.
During his career, Dr. Brown has
received several medals and badges including: the Meritorious Service
Medal (with two oak leaf clusters), the Army Commendation Medal, the
Army Achievement Medal, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal,
the National Defense Service Medal (with two bronze service stars),
the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Army
Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon. The Order of Military
Medical Merit was also recently awarded for significant contributions
to the United States Army Medical Department.
Professional society memberships
held by Dr. Brown include: American Veterinary Medical Association
(AVMA), Kansas Veterinary Medical Association (KVMA), American
Association of Swine Veterinarians, the United States Animal Health
Association, American Association of Industrial Veterinarians and
American Association of Food Hygiene Veterinarians.
Dr. Brown has also been an
active office holder in these organizations including: present member,
Kansas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, past chair, KVMA
Strategic Planning committee, past member KVMA Finance Committee, KVMA
past member, Board of Directors and past member, KVMA Ethics
Committee.
At Kansas State, Dr. Brown was a
member of the Phi Zeta Honorary Society, the Gamma Sigma Delta
Honorary Society, the Alpha Zeta Honor Society and the KSU Varsity
Track Team.
Dr. Brown and his wife, Marilyn,
live in Wamego, Kansas. They have three children Heather, Holly and
Haley, who all graduated from Kansas State University. Dr. Brown is
still an active runner, completing 30 twenty-six mile marathons in the
last several years.
