Description of Program:
Kansas State
University is offering a three year residency in equine internal
medicine. The program is designed to fulfill the ACVIM requirement for
residency training towards board certification in large animal
internal medicine. Enrollment in the graduate school and completion of
a program leading to the Master of Science degree in Clinical Sciences
is required. The goals of the program are to provide clinical and
academic training to prepare the resident for ACVIM board
certification and a career in academic or private referral practice.
The clinical responsibilities of the resident are to provide intensive
management for referral internal medicine and emergency cases, and to
supervise emergency field service calls. Of 1,800 hospital accessions
per year, approximately 500-700 cases are managed by the internal
medicine service. In addition to management of hospitalized patients,
the resident will conduct clinical, didactic, and laboratory
instruction of veterinary students and participate in local, state,
and national continuing education programs. The resident will be
required to submit a minimum of one publication to a refereed journal
during the program which should develop from the resident's Master's
research project. The resident will attend and participate in
conferences, rounds, journal clubs and other academic activities as
directed by the program. Time will be allotted for extramural training
under the supervision of a board certified cardiologist.
The annual
reappointment of the resident is contingent upon continued
satisfactory performance in all aspects of the program.
The Resident must
be physically present for orientation the beginning date of
employment.
