The Early Admission Program for Pre-Veterinary Scholars was established to begin in the fall semester of 1999. The goals of the Early Admission Program are to recruit exceptional candidates for admission to the College of Veterinary Medicine, maintain their career focus on veterinary medicine, and provide career experiences that will direct students towards advanced clinical and research training to produce the leaders of tomorrow in veterinary medicine.

  • Completed Veterinary Scholars Early Admission Application

  • Admission to Kansas State University declaring a major in animal sciences, biochemistry, biology, or other related field directly from high school.

Selection: Acceptance into the Program is based on references, letter of intent, and formal interview. Preference is given to students that have demonstrated an aptitude for leadership, community service, and academics.

Program Benefits:

Faculty Mentoring: Faculty members will be chosen based on interests similar to the scholar. Faculty mentors are responsible for supporting students' career development by facilitating the summer externship program, determining appropriate courses to fulfill the elective requirement, identifying research opportunities within the College, and investigating unique career opportunities outside of the College.

Veterinary Student Mentoring: Veterinary student mentors will be chosen from the first and second-year veterinary classes based on interests and academic achievement. The student mentoring relationship will provide pre-veterinary scholars with unique access to College activities. Student mentors are responsible for notifying pre-veterinary scholars of College activities such as student club meetings, invited speakers, research seminars, and hospital rounds.

Semester Group Meetings: The pre-veterinary scholars will meet on a monthly basis to participate in special events during the academic year to develop a sense of community within the program and share information relevant to the pursuit of their goals.

High School Preparation: While in high school, those interested in veterinary medicine should take college preparatory courses with emphasis in the sciences and mathematics as well as obtain a strong background in oral and written communications. In addition to an interest in the sciences and in animals, those who are interested in a career in veterinary medicine should also enjoy working with people and have a science interest in the health and welfare of both animals and humans. Because veterinary medicine is so diverse, it is advisable to become acquainted with several areas of practice as well as with veterinarians in industry, public health, and research. This may be accomplished by “shadowing” and volunteering or working for a local veterinarian. For the pre-professional program, the high school graduate should have a strong academic record and have complete one and one-half units of algebra and one unit of plane geometry. Other high school subjects that are highly recommended are chemistry, mathematics, physics, and biology. A strong background in oral and written communications and computer literacy is also desirable.

Admission Criteria: Successful candidates must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.4 GPA during completion of their pre-veterinary requirements and must complete the GRE examination. In addition to standard prerequisites, students' must take 6 to 8 elective hours supporting their area of interest, as determined with their faculty mentor. The Pre-Veterinary Scholars can petition to be enrolled during November of their 3rd year of undergraduate work, to be enrolled in the 1st year of the DVM Degree Program given completion of the prerequisites for admission to veterinary school and 6 to 8 elective hours.

This program does not preclude the student's choice to apply to the DVM program at the completion of the 66 hours of pre-requisite course work.
