The KVMA Vendor Trade Show will be held at the K-State Student Union Ballroom Monday, June 4 through Tuesday, June 5. Conference educational session breaks will be staggered throughout both days to provide more time with vendors.

Vaccination Clinic
Rabies and Tetanus vaccine will be available for those desiring vaccination.

Concerning rabies vaccination, the current ACIP recommendations state that serological titers should be performed in lieu of routine boosters for persons previously immunized with a tissue culture (human diploid cell) rabies vaccine. A booster is recommended for persons with a rabies titer of less than 1:5.

Concerning tetanus vaccination, the current recommendation is to have a booster every 10 years.

A nurse from the Kansas State University Lafene Health Center will be available Monday, June 4 from 8:00 to 11:00 am; Tuesday, June 5 from 8:00 to 11:00 am; and Wednesday, June 6 from 8:00 to 11:00 am to administer rabies, tetanus , and adult tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis vaccines.

The Rabies Laboratory will make every effort to have titer results available on Wednesday for persons having blood drawn by 11:00 am Monday, June 4.

Wellness Screening
Phlebotomists will be available on Monday, June 4 from 7:00 to 10:30 am and Tuesday, June 5 from 7:00 to 10:30 am to collect specimens for Comprehensive Panel, CBC with differential, Brucella Titer, Prostate Specific Antigen and/or other tests as listed. A blood sample for a rabies titer may also be collected for testing at the KSU Rabies Laboratory. Samples collected on Monday morning may have results available Wednesday morning.

The Comprehensive Panel will include:

Calcium, A/G Ratio, Total Protein, Chloride, Globulin, BUN, Sodium, Albumin, Creatinine, Potassium, Glucose, CO2, Uric Acid

For accurate results, conference participants who wish to have the chemistry profile done, should fast for 12 hours prior to the time of testing.

A Complete Blood Count (CBC) with differential can be ordered. An IgG Lyme’s Titer for past exposure titers will be available. CEA (Carcinoma Embryonic Antigen) as a monitor for someone who has had colon cancer will be available.

Each participant will receive the results of their Comprehensive Panel and brucella titer via a self-addressed envelope a few days following the completion of the conference. Results of the rabies titer collected after Monday morning will be mailed to the participants after the conference.

Alumni Recognitions: The K-State Veterinary Medical Alumni Association will present the Honorary Alumni Recognitions and Distinguished Alumnus Awards. Dr. Richard Mohney, VMAA President, will facilitate. Certificates of appreciation will be presented to those executive board members completing their term of service and new members will be inducted.

Distinguished Alumnus Award: Dr. Cecil Wayne Ingmire will receive the College's 2007 Distinguished Alumnus Award for outstanding achievements and contributions to the veterinary profession. Dr. Ingmire received his DVM from K-State in 1947.

A celebration DVD “Celebrating 100 Years of Graduating Veterinarians” will be shown highlighting comments from various K-State CVM Graduates and remembering our teaching faculty.

  • Five year class reunions will be held in Manhattan the weekend of June 2nd. The five-year reunion classes include 1947, 1952, 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, and 2002.

  • College and campus tours will be available at 9:00 am and at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 2. Tours will begin at Trotter Hall, first floor foyer.

The K-State College of Veterinary Medicine 13th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan. The four person scramble tournament will be Monday, June 4, 2007, with registration at 7:30 am and a shotgun start at 8:30 am. If you are interested in forming a four-man team, sponsoring a hole, or doing both, please call Chris Gruber.


CLASS OF 1962 LECTURESHIP
In honor of Dr. Dan Upson, KSU 1952
Therapeutic Sessions

Join us for lunch Monday, June 4th as we honor Dr. Dan Upson for his contributions to K-State and the veterinary medical community. Several “therapeutics” conference sessions have been scheduled as part of the tribute as well. The Class of 1962 Endowment for Veterinary Medicine was established to support an ongoing lectureship to be held in honor of Dr. Dan Upson.


BIOSECURITY RESEARCH INSTITUTE TOUR AND ZOONOTIC INFECTIOUS DISEASES PRESENTATION
Take a virtual tour of the BRI building which is a comprehensive biosafety level 3 facility, providing an environmentally safe and secure location for K-state scientists to study pathogens that threaten humans, livestock and crops. Research conducted in the BRI will examine pathways by which pathogens can spread and look at issues related to counter-measures and animal carcass disposal after a potentially catastrophic event. On-site virtual tour is limited to 50 registrants. Live video feed will be available at the Student Union for overflow.

Dr. David Ashford, Assistant Area Director, International Services, APHIS, USDA, will give a presentation on Anthrax to Avian Influenza: Veterinarians Serving Their Country in Federal Service.

Dr. Ashford’s presentation is provided via funds from the Donald C. Kelley Memorial Lectureship. The Lectureship was established in memoriam of Dr. Donald C. Kelley, Professor of Veterinary Public Health at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine from 1958 to 1978. It was Dr. Kelley’s belief that public health is not a separate discipline but plays an important part in the practice of veterinary medicine in many areas.

PREPARING FOR THE CURRENT CHALLENGES (USING AVIAN INFLUENZA AS A MODEL)

Are you prepared for Avian Influenza in Kansas?

Are you prepared to educate others about this disease?

Lessons learned in Avian Influenza response will apply to other foreign animal diseases.

Format: Presenters from a variety of disciplines will discuss the domestic poultry industry in Kansas, wild fowl in Kansas, and the responsibilities of practitioners in the event of an outbreak of High Path AI. Participants will be taught sampling and testing techniques, and the use of personal protective equipment. Principles of cleaning and disinfecting from farm gate to infected premises will be demonstrated. There will be two hours of lectures and two hours in a laboratory setting.

CLINICAL RESEARCH AND CASE STUDY  PRESENTATIONS - NEW THIS YEAR!
Plan to attend the Tuesday evening sessions for the latest in clinically relevant research and case study topics presented by K-State faculty and graduate students. Concurrent sessions will include information for both food animal and companion animal practitioners.


KANSAS VETERINARY DIAGNOSTIC LAB TOUR
Experience the operations of the Kansas Veterinary Diagnostic Lab (KSVDL) as well as learn how to access KSVDL from your clinic! You will practice on the computer to learn how KSVDL will benefit your clinic for submission of lab samples and retrieval of test results. You will use a computer to learn about the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), enter clinic data into the computer, receive results, and have the option to setup KSVDL web access for your clinic. PLUS, you will tour KSVDL and observe their daily operations.

Centennial Plaza, Whispering Gardens and Veterinary Complex Tours

The Centennial Plaza and Whispering Gardens projects are ready for viewing. Be sure to come by and find your brick, paver or plaque!

Tours of the Veterinary Medical Complex, the Centennial Plaza and Whispering Gardens will be available Sunday, June 3, beginning at 2:30 pm and ending at 5:00 pm. There will be transportation to and from the K-State Student Union for the Sunday tours. The Veterinary Complex tours will begin at the Small Animal Desk in Mosier Hall.

KVMA AUXILIARY EVENTS

KVMA Auxiliary Silent Auction
Beginning at 2:00 pm Sunday, June 3, auction items will be on display for bidding in the K-State Union, 2nd floor hallway. Place your bids early for unique veterinary gifts and one-of-a-kind special items you’re sure to want to take home. The KVMA Auxiliary uses the proceeds from this auction as a source for providing scholarships for K-State veterinary students each year.

Final bids can be made Tuesday evening beginning at 4:30 pm, K-State Union 1st floor courtyard. The Sandwich/Ice Cream Social will begin in the Courtyard at 5:30 pm. At 6:00 pm the auction bids will close and winners will be announced. Remember your bid will be appreciated by the young veterinary students receiving scholarships.

Come casual, roll up your sleeves, and put on your gardening gloves! We will be touring the gardens and greenhouses at this most beautiful time of year. As a special “hands on” activity, we will each be making our own garden basket full of fresh flowers and plants, with the expert’s advice and guidance!

Weather permitting; we will enjoy a picnic lunch together
following our time in the garden. Don’t worry though a back up plan will be in place in case our picnic gets rained on!!
