Conference Objectives
The 16th Annual Equine Fall Conference will focus on lameness evaluation in the western performance horse, concentrating on the most common conditions. Participants will be presented some of the newer treatment options available to equine practitioners, including stem cell, IRAD, and shock wave. Real equine lameness cases will be presented. K-State equine faculty speakers will include Drs. Michelle Delco and Maria Ferrer. The guest speaker will be Dr. William Rhoads from Performance Equine Associates, Whitesboro, TX.

8:30 am Evaluation of Forelimb Lameness in the Western Performance Horse.
Common forelimb lamenesses in the western performance horse will be presented.

9:30 am Evaluation of Hindlimb Lameness in the Western Performance Horse.
Common hindlimb lamenesses in the western performance horse will be presented.

10:30 am Refreshment break
10:45 am New Techniques and Therapies in the Treatment of Equine Lameness.
New lameness treatment therapies, including stem cell, IRAP, and shock wave will be presented.

11:45 pm Catered Luncheon (Included with registration)
12:30 pm Equine Lameness Case Presentations.
Interesting equine lameness cases will be presented including diagnoses, treatments, and results.

1:45 pm Lameness in the English Performance Horse.
This presentation will cover problems more common in the English sport horse.

3:00 pm Acute Management of Equine Orthopedic Emergencies.
This presentation will discuss initial evaluation, stabilization, treatment and transport of orthopedic injuries including fractures, severe tendon and ligament injuries, and septic synovial structures.

4:00 pm Applications and Expectations from Low Dose Insemination in the Mare
We will discuss the indications for low dose insemination and insemination doses used. We will also discuss how to perform low dose insemination and what results can be expected.

Guest Speaker

William Rhoads, DVM, DACVS, DABVP
Associate Surgeon, Performance Equine Associates
Dr. Rhoads received his DVM from Oklahoma State University in 1995. He then completed an internship in equine medicine and surgery at Kansas State University followed by a residency in large animal surgery at the University of Georgia. He remained at the University of Georgia as a large animal surgery lecturer until 2000 when he took a position as associate surgeon at Equine Services in Simpsonville, KY. In 2003 Dr. Rhoads joined Performance Equine Associates where he is currently an associate surgeon.

KSU CVM Speakers

Michelle Delco, DVM
Assistant Professor, Equine Surgery
Dr. Delco received her DVM degree from Cornell University. She worked in private practice in Lexington, Kentucky for a year then moved to California to complete an equine surgery residency at UC-Davis. Michelle will join Kansas State University in 2006.

Maria Ferrer,
MV, MS, DACT
Assistant Professor, Equine
Theriogenology
Dr. Ferrer received her Veterinary Degree from the University of Buenos Aires in 2000. In 2005, Maria completed her MS from Louisiana State. The title of her thesis is, "Post-breeding Endometritis After Low Dose Insemination in the Mare". Dr. Ferrer became a Diplomate of the American Academy of Theriogenology in 2005. Maria will join the K-State faculty in August of 2006.
