Conference Objectives
This conference will provide an update on the medicine, diagnostic techniques, and surgical procedures used in companion birds, reptiles, rabbits, and other small exotic mammals. An optional wet lab on diagnostic and surgical procedures in chelonians, an interactive master class on rabbit medicine and surgery, a workshop on capture equipment and techniques used in chemical restraint of wildlife, and a tour of the Sunset Zoo will be offered.

Wet Lab: Diagnostic and Surgical Procedures in Chelonians
Participants will perform the surgical approaches for celiotomies, carapacial fractures, etc., in chelonians. Surgical anatomy of chelonians will also be reviewed. In addition, common diagnostic and treatment techniques will also be practiced. (3 hr)

Master Class: Rabbit Medicine and Surgery: Interactive Session
This interactive session will focus on rabbit medical and surgical cases, and include advances in diagnostic medicine. Using PowerPoint, selected medical conditions and case reports, including diagnostic procedures and treatment strategies, will be presented. (2 hr)

Workshop: Capture Equipment and Techniques Used in the Chemical Restraint of Wildlife
This workshop is designed to introduce students, technicians, and veterinarians to the principles of chemical immobilization of wildlife, and to provide participants a hands-on experience using common capture equipment. (2 hr)

Sunset Zoo Tour
Behind the scenes experience at Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo (detailing animal husbandry, holding, enrichment, nutrition, and education). Tour led by zoo staff. (2 hr)

Guest Speakers

Dr. Mark Mitchell is an Associate Professor in the Bird, Zoo, and Exotic Animal Medicine Service at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Louisiana State University. In addition to his DVM (University of Illinois), Dr. Mitchell also has an MS and a PhD in epidemiology. He has written numerous papers and book chapters, is a co-editor of Seminars in Avian and Exotic Pet Practice, and is a widely sought after speaker (and an entertaining one!) at both national and international meetings on exotic animal medicine.

Dr. Teresa Bradley is a private practitioner from Belton, Missouri, who specializes in the medicine, surgery, and analgesia of exotic pets. She is a Past-President of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians. Dr. Bradley is a graduate of the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Adrian Mutlow received his veterinary degree from the University of Cambridge and his MS in Wildlife Medicine from the Royal Veterinary College, London. He has a broad experience in both non-domestic and domestic animals, as well as wildlife experience in Cameroon. He has served on the faculty at K-State CVM and is currently the head veterinarian at Rolling Hills Zoological Park in Salina, KS.
