Sunset Zoo Tour |
Conference
This conference will provide an update on the medicine, diagnostic
techniques, and surgical procedures used in companion birds, reptiles,
rabbits, and other small exotic mammals. An optional wet lab on avian
orthopedic techniques, a masterclass on birds around the world, and a
tour of the Sunset Zoo will be offered.
Wet Lab: Avian
Orthopedic Techniques
This lab will contain a short didactic presentation on principles of
orthopedic surgery as they apply to birds, followed by demonstration and
hands-on practice in the application of intramedullary pin-external
skeletal fixator tie-in fixators to the humerus and one other long bone.
There will also be a presentation on post-operative patient management
and complementary bandaging methods. Several cases demonstrating the
efficacy of the IM-ESF fixator will be presented for discussion.
MasterClass:
Wildlife Rehabilitation: Practical and Ethical Considerations
This interactive session will overview the practical and ethical
considerations in wildlife rehabilitation. For example, veterinarians
need to be familiar with both pertinent federal laws and with the
specific regulations of their state. A triage policy is essential when
wildlife species are presented, and birds should also be reevaluated
prior to release. There are also a number of ethical or philosophical
issues related to wildlife rehabilitation which will be discussed and
which often relate more to human needs and expectations than any
practical needs of the wildlife involved.
Sunset Zoo Tour
Behind the scenes experience at Manhattan's Sunset Zoo (detailing animal
husbandry, holding, enrichment, nutrition, and education). Tour led by
zoo staff.
Dr. James K. Morrisey,
Diplomate ABVP (Avian), is a faculty member in exotic and wildlife
medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University. Dr.
Morrisey completed an Internship in Exotic Animal, Wildlife, and Zoo
Animal Medicine at KSU, and a Residency in Avian/Exotic Animal Medicine
at the Animal Medical Center (NYC). He has written numerous papers and
book chapters, and is a widely sought after speaker (and an entertaining
one!) at both national and international meetings on exotic animal
medicine.
Dr. Patrick T. Redig
is a Professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of
Minnesota, and Director of the Raptor Center. He is internationally
recognized for his contributions to the conservation and medicine of
birds of prey, and is an author of numerous scientific papers and editor
of several books in this field. His areas of expertise include avian
orthopedics and mycotic diseases.
