Frick Auditorium is located on the second floor of Mosier
Hall. Enter at the Emergency Entrance. Signs will be posted to direct you to registration.
Parking is available on the west side (off Denison Avenue) and
on the east side (off Jardine Drive) of the Veterinary Medical Complex. A parking
permit is not required for weekend parking. Do not park
in the client parking or reserved stalls as you may get ticketed.

This conference will provide up-to-date information on appropriate fluid
selection for the emergency or critical care patient, management of
electrolyte disorders, and emergency aspects of ocular diseases.

the Patient – Marie Kerl
Review basic fluid dynamics, discuss differences in types of fluid
available, and present case examples using crystalloid, colloid, and
hypertonic fluid solutions.

Marie Kerl
Review common causes of hyponatremia and hypernatremia, outline
treatment strategies for acute and chronic disorders, and identify
causes for chloride to change independent of sodium.

Elizabeth Giuliano
Review common ocular emergency presentations and treatments.
Specific topics include proptosis, corneal ulcers, corneal burns,
and foreign bodies.

Giuliano
Identify common presentations of glaucoma, and review emergency
management and new developments in therapy.

The Ups and Downs of Potassium, Phosphorous and
Magnesium – Marie Kerl
Identify common causes and accepted treatments for hyper- and
hypokalemia, hyper- and hypophosphatemia, and disorders of
magnesium. Case presentations will be used to reinforce concepts of
diagnosis and treatment.

Elizabeth Giuliano, DVM, MS, DACVO
Dr. Giuliano received her DVM from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
in 1996. An internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at The
Animal Medical Center in New York was followed by a Comparative Ocular
Pathology and Visual Sciences Fellowship at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Giuliano completed a residency in Veterinary
Ophthalmology in 2002 and is currently Section Head of Ophthalmology and
Assistant Professor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of
Missouri-Columbia.
Marie Kerl,
DVM, DACVIM-SAIM, DACVECC
Dr. Kerl received her DVM from Auburn University in 1987. After two
years in private practice she completed an internship and residency at
the Bobst Hospital of The Animal Medical Center, New York. Following a
year as Associate Veterinarian at the New York Animal Hospital in New
York, Dr. Kerl returned to the Bobst Hospital of The Animal Medical
Center to hold several positions from 1993 to 1999. In 2002 she served
as a Visiting Professor of Veterinary Medicine at the St. George
University School of Veterinary Medicine, Grenada, West Indies. Dr. Kerl
is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of
Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, University of Missouri-Columbia.
