Conference
This conference will provide an update on medicine, diagnostic
techniques and surgical procedures used in companion birds, reptiles,
rabbits, and other small exotic mammals. An optional MasterClass on
Advances in Diagnostic Medicine, a Workshop on Capture Equipment &
Techniques Used in the Chemical Restraint of Wildlife, and a tour of the
Sunset Zoo will be offered.
MasterClass: Advances in
Diagnostic Medicine
Using both PowerPoint and an interactive style, various cutting-edge
diagnostic and treatment techniques will be presented and applied in
select case discussions.
Workshop: Capture Equipment &
Techniques Used in the Chemical Restraint of Wildlife
This Workshop is designed to introduce students, technicians, and
veterinarians to the principles of chemical immobilization of wildlife,
and to provide participants a hands-on experience using common capture
equipment.
Sunset Zoo Tour
Behind the scenes experience at Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo (detailing animal
husbandry, holding, enrichment, nutrition, and education). Tour led by
zoo staff.

Sunset Zoo Tour
|
Dr. Steven Hernandez-Divers
received his BSc(Hons) in 1994 and his DZooMed in 2000 from the Royal
College of Veterinary Surgeons (London). He was also designated a
Specialist in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine by the Royal College. After
having spent 7 years in private practice, Dr. Divers is presently an
Assistant Professor of Exotic Animal, Wildlife, and Zoological Medicine
at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia. He is
internationally recognized as an expert in his field and for his
innovative teaching and lecturing techniques. For 2 years in a row, Dr.
Divers was honored with the Best Speaker Award at the International
Conference on Exotics.
Dr. Pilar Fish
completed an internship in Exotic Animal and Zoological Medicine at KSU
and a residency in Zoological Medicine at the Oklahoma City Zoo and
Oklahoma State University, established and operated an exotic animal
practice for 5 years, and is currently an Associate Veterinarian at the
Pittsburgh Zoo, Pittsburgh, PA.
Dr. James W. Carpenter, Diplomate ACZM, is
Professor and Head of the Zoological Medicine Service, Past-President of
the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, Editor-in-Chief of the
Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery,
editor of the
Exotic Animal Formulary (2004), and co-editor
of Ferrets, Rabbits, and Rodents:
Clinical Medicine and Surgery (2nd ed).
Dr.
Connie Ketz, received her veterinary
training in Bern, Switzerland, prior to completing an internship in
Exotic Animal and Zoological Medicine at KSU and a residency at the
Oklahoma City Zoo and Oklahoma State University. Dr. Ketz is currently a
Clinical Assistant Professor in Zoological Medicine at KSU and the
veterinarian for the Topeka Zoo.
Dr. Adrian
Mutlow, is a graduate of Cambridge
University, has an MSc from the University of London, and had 6 years of
clinical experience prior to completing a residency in Zoological
Medicine at KSU. He is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in
Zoological Medicine at KSU and the veterinarian for the Rolling Hills
Zoo (Salina).
Dr.
Christal Pollock, Diplomate ABVP (Avian),
completed a residency in Exotic Animal and Zoological Medicine and
served as a faculty member at the University of Tennessee. She is
currently an Assistant Professor with the Zoological Medicine Service at
KSU.
Dr.
Jessica Siegal, recently completed an
internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery and is presently an
Intern in Zoological Medicine in the Veterinary Medical Teaching
Hospital at Kansas State University.
