Frick Auditorium is located on the second floor of Mosier Hall.  Signs will be posted to direct you to registration.

Parking
Parking is available on the west side (off Denison Avenue) and on the east side (off Jardine Drive) of the Veterinary Medical Complex. A parking permit is not required for weekend parking. Do not park in the client parking or reserved stalls as you may get ticketed.

Objectives
Conference
This conference will provide an update on medicine and diagnostic techniques and surgical procedures used in companion birds, reptiles, rabbits, and other small exotic mammals. An optional wet lab on avian endoscopic techniques, a workshop on exotic animal diagnostics: case discussions, and a tour of the Sunset Zoo will be offered.

Avian Endoscopic Techniques Wet Lab
An Introduction to Avian Endoscopy: Using 2.7 mm endoscopes, monitors, and associated equipment, each team of participants will perform a variety of anatomic approaches and clinical procedures in an anesthetized bird. Limited number of registrants, practitioner priority.

Exotic Animal Diagnostics: Case Discussions Workshop
Using case histories, radiographs, and clinical pathology data from reptiles, birds, and small mammals, cases will be discussed and diagnoses made. This workshop is designed for veterinary students and technicians.

Sunset Zoo Tour
Behind the scenes experience at Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo (detailing animal husbandry, holding, enrichment, nutrition, and education). Tour led by zoo staff.

Guest Speakers
Dr. Michael Taylor
founded the first exclusively avian and exotic animal practice in Ontario, Canada, in 1986. In 1994, he joined the staff of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the Ontario Veterinary College as Service Chief in Avian and Exotic Animal Medicine. Dr. Taylor has instructed laboratories in avian endoscopy for 13 years and has developed a unique diagnostic endoscopy system for birds. He has received acclaim for his instructional endophotographs and for his endoscopy training seminars. Author of numerous papers and book chapters, Dr. Taylor brings a wealth of practical and research experience to our conference in the field of avian and exotic animal medicine and surgery.

Dr. Rob Coke is the Senior Veterinarian at the San Antonio Zoo with extensive experience in the medicine and surgery of reptiles. Prior to his present position, Dr. Coke was a Resident at the Oklahoma City Zoo/Oklahoma College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition, he was an Intern with the Exotic Animal, Wildlife, and Zoo Animal Medicine Service at KSU in 2000-2001.

KSU Faculty
Dr. James W. Carpenter, Diplomate ACZM, is Professor and Head of the Exotic Animal, Wildlife, and Zoo Animal Medicine Service, Past-President of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery, co-author of the Exotic Animal Formulary, and co-editor of the upcoming Ferrets, Rabbits, and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery (2nd ed).

Dr. Ruthanne Chun, Diplomate ACVIM, is an Assistant Professor in Clinical Oncology. Dr. Chun did a residency in comparative oncology at Purdue University and then worked as a Clinical Instructor in oncology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine before joining Kansas State University faculty in 1997.

Dr. Jennifer D’Agostino, recently completed an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery and is presently an Intern in Exotic Animal, Wildlife, and Zoo Animal Medicine in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at Kansas State University.

Dr. Laura Garrett, Diplomate ACVIM, is an Assistant Professor in Clinical Oncology. Dr. Garrett completed a residency in comparative oncology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, after which she spent 1-1/2 years at a referral practice in New Zealand before coming to Kansas State University.

Dr. Ramiro Isaza, Diplomate ACZM, has extensive experience in medicine and surgery of non-domestic animals, including serving for 5 years as a clinician at the Los Angeles Zoo, prior to joining the Exotic Animal, Wildlife, and Zoo Animal Medicine Service in 1998 as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Christal Pollock, Diplomate ABVP (Avian), was formerly a faculty member at the University of Tennessee and is currently an Assistant Professor with the Exotic Animal, Wildlife, and Zoo Animal Medicine Service.
