• Parking
  Parking is available on the west side (off Denison Avenue) and on the east side (off McCain Lane) of the Veterinary Medical Complex. A parking permit will not be necessary for the weekend. Do not park in the client parking or reserved stalls as you may get ticketed.

• Objectives
  This conference will provide an update on medicine and diagnostic techniques and surgical procedures used in companion birds, reptiles, rabbit, and other small exotic mammals. In addition, there will be an optional Wet Lab on surgical techniques used in companion birds, and an optional chemical immobilization and capture equipment workshop.

Hands-on laboratory: in addition to instrumentation and use of radiosurgery and surgical eye loupes, techniques including ingluviotomy, left lateral celiotomy, proventriculotomy, salpingohysterectomy or castration, and cloacapexy will be performed.

1:00 pm- Workshop: Chemical Immobilization and
3:30 pm Capture Equipment -- Dr. Kirk Suedmeyer
This workshop will familiarize the participant with various ways of immobilizing animals in a zoological, wildlife , and, in some cases, a private practice setting. Using targets, participants will also get "hands-on" experience in using capture equipment.

• Guest Speakers
  R. Avery Bennett, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVS
  Dr. Bennett is an Assistant Professor in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida. Prior to his curent position, he was the Chief Veterinarian at the San Francisco Zoological Gardens. Dr. Bennett is a recognized authority in zoological medicine, and is a pioneer in the field of surgical procedures used in reptiles, birds, and small exotic mammals.

Jeffrey Baier, MS, DVM
Dr. Baier is an Associate Veterinarian at the Denver Zoo, and has a strong interest in the physiology, medical, and surgical management of reptiles.

• KSU Speakers
  James W. Carpenter, MS, DVM, Diplomate ACZM
  Dr. Carpenter, Professor and Head of the Exotic Animal, Wildlife, and Zoo Animal Medicine Service, College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University, is President of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery, and co-author of the Exotic Animal Formulary. Dr. Carpenter is the conference coordinator.

Ramiro Isaza, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACZM
Dr. Isaza has extensive experience in medicine and surgery of non-domestic animals, including serving for 5 years as a clinician at the Los Angeles Zoo, prior to joining the Exotic Animal, Wildlife, and Zoo Animal Medicine Service in 1998 as an Assistant Professor. He is also an Associate Editor for the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery.

Greg Fleming, DVM
Dr. Fleming is currently an Intern with the Exotic Animal, Wildlife, and Zoo Animal Medicine Service at KSU, and was formerly an exotic/small aimal practitioner in Pennsylvania.

Peter Helmer, DVM
Dr. Helmer was in an exotic animal practice in Calgary, Canada, for 2 years prior to becoming an Intern with the Exotic Animal, Wildlife, and Zoo Animal Medicine Service at KSU.

Kirk Suedmeyer, DVM
Dr. Suedmeyer is the Senior Veterinarian at the Kansas City Zoo. Prior to his present position, he served as the veterinarian at the Potawatomi Zoo in Indiana. Dr. Suedmeyer is Past-President of the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Missouri.
