  Parking is available on the west side (off Denison Avenue) and on the east side (off McCain Lane) of the Veterinary Medical Complex. A permit is required to park on campus Friday, September 10. This permit will be mailed to you upon receipt of your registration. Do not park in the client parking or reserved stalls as you may get ticketed.

• Cancellation Clause
  On August 31, the decision to hold or cancel this workshop will be made based on the number of registrations vs. the program costs. If the conference is canceled, we will notify only the people who have registered. If you have registered and the meeting is canceled, we will notify you by September 2. If the conference is canceled, we will refund you the registration fee but cannot be held responsible for other travel or lodging costs. If you wish to register after August 31, please call 785-532-5566 to verify if the conference will be held.
   

• Objectives
  Veterinarians and others will learn to work one-on-one with Cow-Calf producers to improve profitability through the implementation of Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA).

We will learn the importance of "Measuring so we can Manage".

Veterinarians, Extension Professionals, Industry Professionals, and others involved in the Cow-Calf sector will complete the classroom training portion of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) SPA certification requirements. Participants wishing to complete the certification would be required to complete a SPA analysis for 10 herds and submit data into the national data base.

• Introduction to IRM-SPA

• Production Record Keeping with SPA in mind

• Financial Record Keeping with SPA in mind

• Combining production and financial summaries into SPA (Tools, hands-on computer use, etc.)

• Working with producers (how we motivate producers to keep the necessary records and implement the IRM-SPA approach).

• Using SPA results to implement a plan to improve efficiency and profitability Hands-on computer lab using management software.

• Refreshment breaks & lunch is included with the registration fee

Conference Speakers
Rodney Jones, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics at Kansas State University. He holds both B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agricultural Economics from Kansas State, and received his PhD in Agricultural Economics from Virginia Tech in 1995. Dr. Jones currently has a split Extension and Research appointment. His research interests include both production and marketing issues in the U.S. livestock industry. Rodney has a particular interest in improving the economic efficiency of the livestock industry. Extension responsibilities focus on a variety of livestock production economic topics.

Twig Marston, Beef Extension Specialist, Cow/Calf Management, Department of Animal Science and Industry, KSU. Dr. Marston received his MS degree in animal breeding from KSU and his PhD degree in animal nutrition from Oklahoma State University. In 1998 he became an extension specialist in cow-calf genetics and an extension livestock specialist for the department of Animal Sciences and Industry. In addition to his livestock production responsibilities, Twig places a research emphasis on nutrition and management, as well as genetic evaluation for feedlot and performance characteristics. He is on the Board of Directors for the American Shorthorn Association.

Jeff Hill, Beef Nutritionist for Farmland Industries, Lawrence, KS. Jeff is primarily responsible for field support in Kansas as well as providing training/support to local Cooperatives. Jeff works with producers on nutrition and management programs as well as retained ownership programs. He recently started working on a production record keeping program.
