2008 AWVF Student Scholarship Recipients Erin Casey has participated in international work through University of Georgia College of Public Health Maymester Vietnam Program. A second year student, she works as Laboratory Technician with the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study and on treatment crew of the Small Animal Intensive Care Unit. Ms. Casey serves in several associations in school, the Georgia VMA Political Action Committee and even as board member for the Aikin County Open Land Trust. She received her award from funding sponsor, Intervet/Schering-Plough Anima Health. A third year student at the University of Minnesota, Jenny Cho-MacSwain was specially selected by Hill’s Pet Nutrition Inc. to receive her award at the 2008 ACVIM meeting. Ms. Cho-MacSwain will focus on small animal medicine and mentor 4H youths interested in pigs. While obtaining her Master of Science degree in Infectious Disease, she performed research on porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), even thought she had never worked with pigs. Ms. Cho-MacSwain wants to challenge and motivate girls to choose their best careers. Virginia (Gini) Frauenthal is a third year student at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine and National President of Student Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. She has developed a Small Animal Emergency Team and ICU Rounds. As President Elect of SCAVMA, Ms. Frauenthal organized notable speakers for meetings and oversees several SCAVMA committees. She would like to become a veterinary professor after completing a residency so she can help shape the future of veterinary students. Ms. Frauenthal’s scholarship was funded by Pfizer Animal Health. Fort Dodge Animal Health funded the award for Maureen Carolyn Gates who will graduate from University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. She serves as Vice President of the Public Health Club and is Pianist/Accompanist for the Flea Club. Ms. Gates volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol, the USAF Auxiliary and is a student pilot. She has researched the spread of West Nile virus and will focus on epidemiology and public policy. (See photo) Sara Hashway,
a second year student at University of Georgia plans to specialize in
Laboratory Animal Medicine. As President of her class and SCAVMA senator,
Ms. Hashway participates in fundraising and educational events that benefit
school organizations, the teaching hospital and local community. Some of her
memberships include Student Association for Global Awareness and the ONE
Diversity Club. Ms. Hashway will develop an international exchange program
with a facility in Barcelona Spain. Veterinary Products Laboratories funded
