The 2006 AWV Student Scholarship
award recipients were: Sonja Banjanin,
M.Sc. is a second year student at Ontario Veterinary College, University
of Guelph. Originally from Serbia & Montenegro, Ms. Banjanin wants
to improve animal welfare on both a domestic and international level.
She is Co-President of the OVC Animal Welfare Club, which presents an
Annual Animal Welfare Forum with worldwide speakers. Ms. Banjanin volunteered
with Animal Rescue New Orleans and this summer she will work with World
Organization for Animal Health to help design international humane standards. Cassandra D. Mundy,
Washington State University second year student, is an entrepreneur with her own
business, as President-Elect of SCAVMA, and
head of the student / VMA mentorship program. Demonstrating initiative
along with good common sense, Ms. Mundy owns and operates a Tattooing
/ Piercing business and works as a Veterinary Technician in the teaching
hospital ICU. She is dedicated to community service activities, some
of which include therapeutic horsemanship and Josh & Friends Project.
Despite a recent severe injury, Ms. Mundy continues to balance citizenship,
personal development, and academics. A representative of VCA Antech
presented Ms. Mundy her award at a dinner on April 21. Emily Wheeler
is a dual degree second year student at University of Illinois, expecting her
DVM in 2011 and her PhD, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in 2009. With a
variety of academic interests, considerable research experience, and numerous
publications and presentations, Ms. Wheeler also organizes symposia and mentors
undergraduate students. She is involved in several local, state and national
organizations related to veterinary medicine and ecology. Focusing on mentorship and public educations, Ms. Wheeler wants to liaison with health
professionals, environmental researchers and legislators to collaborate on
conservation efforts involving zoonotic
diseases. Ms. Wheeler received her award at a ceremony on April 8. Stephanie Young
is a non-traditional third year student with a diverse background in a financial
management firm and in army service. She understands the importance of
balancing career and family, especially while her husband was deployed. At
Kansas State University, Ms. Young pursues a dual degree DVM/MS (Anatomy and
Physiology) program while she works as a research scholar and in the equine ICU
and mentors young girls. She would like to pursue an internship in equine
medicine and possibly earn a PhD in comparative medicine. A representative of Boehringer Ingelheim
Vetmedica Inc. presented Ms. Young her award on May 2. The companies and people who provided the funding for these scholarship awards were:
