“A Century of Women in Veterinary Medicine in the United States”
Veterinary Student Essay Contest
The Association for Women Veterinarians Foundation (AWVF) is pleased to sponsor a one-time veterinary student essay contest for US veterinary students. In 1910, the first female veterinarians graduated from US veterinary schools: Dr. Florence Kimball from Cornell and Dr. Elinor McGrath from the Chicago Veterinary College. The AWVF essay contest seeks to honor these pioneering women and foster research in the history of veterinary medicine among current veterinary students. Any currently enrolled student of a veterinary school in the United States (male or female) is eligible. Proof of enrollment may be requested.
Students are asked to submit a 1000 – 1500 word essay on the theme of “A Century of Women in Veterinary Medicine in the United States” although the exact essay title may be modified by the author. Essays must be double spaced and well referenced with appropriate citations and reference list. Four (4) copies must be submitted to the AWVF Awards Committee Chairperson (Dr. Chris Stone Payne) at the address below. Each submission must contain the following in a cover page:
All submitted essays shall become property of the AWVF and must be postmarked by January 30, 2010. The winning essay may be published on the AWVF Web site and other venues. Incomplete or late entries cannot be accepted. The decision of the AWVF Awards Committee will be final. Second and third year veterinary students may also apply to the AWVF annual veterinary student scholarship programs, but the entries are separate and must be separately submitted. Essays will be judged on content, style, and originality.
The author of the winning essay will receive a cash award of $500. An additional $1000 in travel funds will be made available to the author if they are able to attend the 2010 AVMA Convention in Atlanta, Georgia.
All entries should be sent to the attention of Dr. Chris Stone Payne at 32205 Allison Drive, Union city, CA 94587. Questions regarding the contest should be directed to Dr. Stacy Pritt at stacy.pritt@bbraun.com.
