Outstanding Woman Veterinarian of the Year Award Recipients

2008 Distinguished Service Award

The Association for Women Veterinarians is pleased to announce the name of our 2008 Distinguished Service Award recipient for this year, Ms. Judith Collier-Reid. The DSA is awarded to any individual (man or woman, veterinarian or non-veterinarian), to recognize special effort and contributions by that individual to advance and improve the status of women in veterinary medicine, such as contributions to professional groups, state or local associations, Veterinary State Boards, publications, etc.

As stated in her letter of nomination by Anmarie Macfarland, DVM, President of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association, “We believe there are few non-veterinary women who have done more to promote the professionalism of women in veterinary medicine in recent years than Ms. Reid. Judith has labored with great passion for the past five years to support and promote the veterinary profession through leadership as Executive Director for the Southwest Veterinary Symposium (SWVS). The SWVS is a major regional veterinary conference fully owned by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association together with the state veterinary medical associations of the four surrounding states, including New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. Because of her efforts, hundreds of female veterinarians every year receive continuing professional education that advances them within the profession, heightens their standards of practice, and gives them the ability to shape their careers in directions of their own choosing. Since the SWVS is a significant professional networking opportunity for all attendees, women veterinarians have the opportunity through this venue to mentor and be mentored by veterinarians of the highest professional caliber of both genders.

A final comment might best demonstrate Judith Collier-Reid’s devotion to the cause of women in veterinary medicine. Last fall, Judith convinced a largely all-male SWVS Board of Managers to establish a Task Force on Women in Veterinary Medicine and to approve a full track of CE devoted to better serving women in the veterinary profession. As a result of her efforts, an outstanding group of men and women veterinarians are now actively addressing the needs and interests of women veterinarians through specific programming presented during the SWVS Annual Symposium. This effort is in its infancy and I would expect it to just get better in coming years, so that all women attendees will find sessions and presenters relevant to their individual interests and career aspirations.”

We proudly present Ms. Judith Collier-Reid as our 2008 Distinguished Service Award recipient.
