Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Ruminant Nutrition
 

Position available: Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Ruminant Nutrition. Position is located at the Veterinary Medical Teaching and Research Center (VMTRC) in Tulare, CA. Salary dependent on qualifications and experience. PhD in Ruminant Nutrition or a related field is required. DVM or equivalent preferred. Documented evidence of research activity and/or ability is required. Experience or knowledge in one of the following areas (i.e. nutrient excretion by ruminants, environmental stewardship, farm nutrient balances, and impacts of cattle nutrition/management on air, water and soil quality) is preferred. Familiarity with production practices common to California’s livestock production systems is desired, particularly large scale dairy production. Evidence of, or potential for leadership and initiative is desired. Demonstrated aptitude/experience in teaching, particularly clinical instruction, preferred. Documented record of creative scholarship or potential to develop an independent clinical research program in applied ruminant nutrition is required with knowledge and experience in agroecosystem health preferred. The candidate must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. Documentation of applied expertise and competence in ruminant nutrition is required. Teaching responsibilities include: 1) participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum; 2) teaching in the VMTRC; 3) participation in the graduate clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH; and 4) participation in the graduate academic programs (MS and PhD) of the campus.

Clinical: the position includes a 30% clinical commitment to maintain a teaching program with cooperator dairy herds, calf ranch operations, and feedlots. The individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students and residents; activity in all areas of ration formulation; problem solving of nutritional and metabolic origin; nutrient management and agroecosystem health; providing nutrition service to clients; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.

Research: the position will emphasize the interaction of ruminant nutrition and dairy production. Development of an innovative research program in the areas of air and/or water quality, environmental stewardship, and other nutrition-related issues as they apply to dairy production and management in California and the West is preferred. The successful applicant will be expected to build strong partnerships with members of the dairy and beef industries in California. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to post-graduate training and incorporate postdoctoral residents in food systems/production medicine into these projects.

Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education and other appropriate means is required.
