Senior Extension Associate

Cornell University Duck Research Laboratory, Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC), Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences.

The successful candidate will be in residence at the Cornell Duck Research Laboratory, located in Eastport on Long Island, NY.

The Cornell University Duck Research Laboratory (CDRL) is a unit of the AHDC that serves as a national and international reference for diagnosis and research on duck diseases. This laboratory is also engaged in the production and testing of USDA-licensed biologics to be used in meat producing ducks. The personnel includes 9 individuals consisting of 2 senior extension associates (including this position), 1 biologics production manager, 1 farm/animal facility manager, 1 administrative manager and 4 technicians. The CDRL provides technical service to the duck producers, including members of the International Duck Research Cooperative, Inc (IDRC). and clients of the AHDC. The CDRL comprises facilities for diagnosis and research on duck diseases, for production and testing of biologics, and also maintains a duck-breeding colony to supply susceptible ducklings and embryonated eggs. This position provides an adequate field for species-oriented disease research. Good opportunities for collaboration within the College of Veterinary Medicine and Cornell University also exist.

Qualifications: Candidates should have a DVM degree or equivalent with training in virology or bacteriology (Master, or Ph.D.). Veterinarians with a master in avian medicine are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates should have interest and capability in poultry disease diagnosis and research. The incumbent will be a regular member of the academic staff of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. Individual must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work cooperatively with other laboratory personnel in a small laboratory environment away from the main Cornell University campus.

Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to: 1) Participate in the avian disease diagnostic and extension service, 2) Provide technical assistance to duck producers, 3) Participate in the development, production and testing of USDA-licensed biologics for use in commercial ducks, 4) Develop and conduct applied research on problems of economic importance to the commercial duck industry, and 5) Supervise technical support staff.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
